Executive summary

This paper explores the referral pathways for the youth, children, and family services in Good Shepherd Family Services. An organization in Victoria known as Good Shepherd Youth and Family Service works toward catering to the ever-changing requirements of low-income populations. It offers support services to victims of domestic violence, including counseling regarding their finances and short-term housing options (Good Shepherd, 2023). The organization also offers "no-interest" loans to struggling people and provides foster care for children. Through interviews, surveys, and the examination of data obtained from various sources, it has been determined that the organization responsible for administering more than 90 different programs benefits many distinct groups. Two excellent examples of this program are the Integrated Family Services Program and the Youth Homeless Service (Good Shepherd, 2023). Both programs assist homeless youth. Even though the organization has helped tens of thousands of individuals in Australia, it has not successfully resolved the problems faced by people from various socioeconomic backgrounds. Because of this, it is recommended that more outreach be done to urge people who are homeless to seek assistance. One recent change is implementing a policy to eliminate homelessness in Australia.

Introduction

In the 1990s, Good Shepherd Services and other groups in New York City that help young people came together with the help of the Youth Development Institute to form The Networks for Youth Development. They aimed to look at academic literature, research, and their own direct experience (Good Shepherd, 2023). The agency worked together to make a set of guides that explain the parts, ideas, practices, and results of a good youth development system. Good Shepherd Services still uses these ideas in its work, changing its organizational structure and programs to help kids and families be successful and become independent (Good Shepherd, 2023). Also, the group chose a Youth and Family Development Model because it best reflects the rich history and care philosophy that the sisters of the Good Shepherd, who fund Good Shepherd Services, have given us. Their legacy of kindness, care, and acceptance led us to create our purpose and values. Surveys and secondary data analysis were used to determine how people heard about the group.

Findings and discussion

Good Shepherd's Assistance is a non-profit organization leader in youth development, education, and helping families. Over 26,000 children, teens, and families participate yearly in over 90 programs. The group's programs are meant to help people reach their fullest potential at home, school, and neighborhood. This group gives underprivileged kids in New York City a chance to change the world and make their own decisions. Good Shepherd Services helps kids, teens, and families through the hardest things, giving them the tools they need to succeed. They offer efficient, high-quality services that help families, organizations, and communities work together better. They work with local governments to improve Australia by promoting participants' local and national goals.

Good Shepherd helps young people get past problems and build a better future. The Good Shepherd thinks that every young person is important. But sometimes, young people need more help, especially when they face problems that stop them from taking advantage of chances and succeeding. These include problems with mental health, interpersonal conflicts like abuse, technology, a lack of trust in authority, trouble keeping students motivated, violence in the family, trauma, and being a young parent (Bennett-Daly et al., 2022). The group helps young people with specific problems by using a personalized approach and working well with partners in the area. As a result of its activities, young people have more chances and can see how valuable they are. Good Shepherd provides education, programs to help people stay healthy, and skilled counseling (Good Shepherd, 2023). The organization works with neighborhood groups, schools, and parents to help kids do better in school and feel better about themselves.

The Good Shepherd Services (GSS) transfer school program was made with help from the NYC Department of Education (DOE), according to the GSS website. Students in the transfer school program usually need 50?wer credits to finish on time than students who go to a regular high school. This program helps 16–21-year-olds who have dropped out of school and are considering returning (usually because they are too old). It also helps students who have not done well in traditional school and are not on track to finish by age 21 (Stonehouse, Theobald, and Threlkeld, 2022).

During an interview with a client of the Youth Homeless Service, I found out that the program helped the subject find a place to live and deal with different needs. Good Shepherd helps 16–24-year-olds who are homeless by giving them general help, knowledge, and case management. The group helps fit each person's or family's needs to become more independent and keep a stable place to live.

The organization's website says many young Australians have a big problem with homelessness. Show that the situation has worsened by showing how the number of homeless people has risen in places they have never been before. The latest official numbers show about 8,200 homeless people in 2016 (Bennett-Daly et al., 2022). The report said that about 35 percent of the community was completely broke. Even though the government has tried to give more people power and make it easier to reach their economic goals, 0.4% of the country's population has stayed homeless over the years (Bennett-Daly et al., 2022). Stonehouse, Theobald, and Threlkeld (2022) say that the situation could worsen if the right plans are not made or implemented. Most children harmed will not have access to food, clean water, and even a small amount of parental care. They are more likely to say that something bad happened to their health. So, they are more likely to be victims of abuse, mistreatment, and crime. These things show that to solve this social problem, we need tips or opinions that are based on facts.

The government has done many things to help people who are homeless in this country. Because of how the company does business, its operations seem to have bad effects. (Pawson et al., 2018) A multidisciplinary team will be able to focus on the root causes of homelessness if they have a plan based on evidence that includes all the right people. This information will help shape some of the best ways to encourage parents to have healthy children and give them the necessary skills and tools. This plan will help them get ready for future employment opportunities.

Some of the reasons for inequality that have been a threat to the purity of society for a long time can be fixed by the right people and groups in this country. Bennett-Daly et al. (2022) say that a society that welcomes everyone is important because it makes it easier for everyone to reach their social and economic goals when there is no prejudice or discrimination. They will get a great education and do well when they start businesses in their towns. (Good Shepherd, 2023). This kind of empowerment will make the gap between the rich and the poor smaller in every Australian culture. Fewer people will be poor because people are moving up and down the social ladder.

The government needs to do more to find out how disappointment, lack of economic success, and not getting along with other people can lead to people being homeless. Pawson et al. (2018) say that most welfare programs do not consider the needs of soldiers and older people. Most of the time, these people cannot get jobs to support themselves and their families. Also, they have difficulty giving their kids the help they need, or even worse; they start using illegal drugs. When these things come together, more people are homeless. If these issues are investigated, it could lead to a shift in thinking that will finally meet the needs of more people.

Good Shepherd runs a program called "Integrated Family Services" to help parents improve how they care for their families. Family services help parents deal with problems that might hinder their child's growth (Simpson et al., 2022). Some problems that may arise are parenting skills and connections with your children, family conflict and/or breakdown, physical or mental illness, drug abuse, disability, social or economic poverty, loneliness, and a lack of community ties. The program at Good Shepherd includes one-on-one and group help, group work, and counseling for parents and families (Good Shepherd, 2023). For this service, you can only suggest. Families are asked to call ChildFIRST Brimbank-Melton so that a worker can talk with them about what to do next and set up an appointment.

RISE (Resilience, Independence, Support, Engagement) NSW is another referral program at Good Shepherd that works with children between 10 to 15 years and deals with problems that affect the child's schooling, safety, health, and welfare. RISE says that parents and other adults who care for young people have the most effect on their growth (Good Shepherd, 2023). The RISE support staff works with parents and other caregivers to help their children grow and develop. RISE support workers help parents feel like they have the power to help their child or teen in the best way possible. Staff at RISE handle each child's or teen's case on an individual basis. Case management helps young people figure out what they want and how to get there by holding workshops at schools (Good Shepherd, 2023). These classes help young people reach their full potential by teaching them how to be resilient, have self-confidence, and deal with problems.

According to the website for company, Good Shepherd set up a school in Waranara for 9th through 12th kids who have trouble staying focused in the classroom. Young people face big problems that make it challenging to do well in school. Waranara helps students in every part of their lives because doing well in school and being happy are inextricably tied (Good Shepherd, 2023). This service provides specialized help with well-being, personalized help with teaching and learning, and on-site access to counselors for teens and families. The Waranara School believes that all teenagers have the right to educational choices that are good for them and consider their unique lives and personalities. The school accepts all students, even those with trouble meeting their academic goals. The group tries to give students good academic and personal support so they can get the most out of their education and life (Simpson et al., 2022). The features of the school make it a different kind. Staff members work hard to ensure students with different learning styles, capacities, and abilities can find tasks and solutions that work for them. One of these is a personalized learning setting that is supportive, flexible, and polite. Also, the program gives students helpful support and a clear way to find and fix any other personal, family, or school problems that might be stopping them from going to school.

Waranara still offers traditional educational activities, such as qualified teachers and learning support staff, social and recreational activities, a student leadership/peer mentoring program, and help from the Transition Support Coordinator so that you can follow the educational and career paths you want after you graduate (Good Shepherd, 2023). The application process includes filling out a referral form, getting information about the student's academic history and personal background, talking to the student's parents or guardians and Waranara School staff, talking to the student's previous school, and doing an internal evaluation.

Recommendations

Rapid rehousing should be something that the Good Shepherd should think about if they want to help homeless people with their problems. This approach involves finding people who need a place to live and building permanent or semipermanent structures for them. The government can meet the wants and expectations of these people by having the power to put policies into action. People who can return to their houses may do so under a new plan. There may be a need for new efforts to get more homeless people to go to shelters or other institutions for help. The government can solve this problem if all its most important partners and stakeholders work together. Because of this, more people will get the help they need and be ready to participate in activities that can change their lives.

Homeless Australians must be the focus of a program covering both cities and the countryside. A coordinated system is needed to ensure that the government and other members of society work together to find people who need more care. Using this method, the government will be able to find every homeless person and give them a place to stay. Because any break in the process means starting over from the beginning, the practice must be kept up. Due to the unique problems of homelessness, people who get help will also need extra help, therapy, medical care, and social support. This method will help the people of Australia and help the country's economy grow.
