Select one of the conflicts from International Crisis Group’s “10 Conflicts to Watch in 2023” list and explain how it illustrates one of the following conceptual issues:
- Territorial integrity as a principle of sovereignty
- Forced migration as a security issue
- The state’s monopoly on legitimate physical violence
- The security dilemma
- The limits of international humanitarian law ***UPDATED****
- Terrorism as a threat to the state
- The state as source of insecurity
The table below shows suggested combinations of concepts and conflicts. While it is not obligatory to select a combination from the table, it is strongly recommended insofar as some cases work better than others with the different conceptual issues.

Task Requirements
- You must use a minimum of ten (10) sources to support your discussion and analysis.
- Importantly, at least five (5) of these must be scholarly (peer reviewed) sources, and these must be used to back up your main points. You can use readings from the weekly reading lists, or you can find your own from IR journals (see the Week 1 reading list).
- Non-scholarly sources must be reliable and published no earlier than 1 January 2022.

- You may not reference lecture or seminar slides.
Referencing, Style Requirements and Template
You must use APA7 referencing. See the Deakin guide to referencing for further details.
Your essay must:
- be on A4 or Letter size paper
- use Arial, Helvetica, Calibri or Verdana font
- use a font size of at least 11 point
- be double-spaced
- use paragraphs and complete sentences (i.e. not in note form and no dot/bullet points)
Advice
- Evaluate the task prompt carefully and think about how to define any terms or ideas that are central to the question.
- Make a detailed plan before you start writing. Ensure that you have a clear argument (i.e. in what ways the case illustrates the concept), an introduction, a conclusion and well-constructed body-paragraphs that each address a specific point.
- Make use of the study skills materials and resources that are made available specifically for this unit and more widely at Deakin.
Task Deadline
- Your essay must be submitted by 20:00 on Friday 12 May 2023.
- Extension requests must be submitted and approved before this deadline.
- Late penalties will apply from the next calendar day (i.e. from 00:00 on Saturday 13 May 2023).
- Special Consideration applications should be submitted within 3 university working days of the deadline. If your circumstances have prevented you from doing this, please contact the Unit Chair to discuss your situation.
