Case Study:

Harold Janssen is an 85-year-old male with Parkinson’s disease. Harold has just been admitted into the residential facility because he and his wife, Gloria, were no longer coping.

Harold and Gloria have 3 children, two sons and a daughter, none of whom live locally. One son, George, is regularly in contact and visits monthly.

Harold and Gloria were independent, until recently when Harold has had several ‘near-miss’ falls. He does not currently use a walking aid and has said he is having episodes of having trouble to start walking after sitting for a time, or in a confined space.

At home, Harold has often forgotten to take his Parkinsonian medication and has had periods of immobility when this has happened. He has been unwilling to leave the house and has stopped going to his exercise group. Gloria complains that he has been sitting in his armchair all day and is miserable. He says he is often sad and sometimes cries.

Harold has urgency of urine and has started having accidents, which have made his clothes smelly. This upsets Harold and Gloria. Harold does suffer from constipation at times. Harold says he often doesn’t feel like eating and Gloria has said he often coughs at mealtimes. Since his diagnosis, Harold has lost 15 kgs.
