UOHealthandSociety Assessment
Taskdescription
For this assessment, you will present a report on the prevalence of smoking. You willbe required to present smoking prevalence, by age group, across three populations.Youwillthendescribeandcomparethedata, anddiscusstheroleofthedeterminantsof health and health literacy in relation to the observed prevalence for eachpopulation.
Taskaims
Inthisassessmentyouwilldemonstratetheskillsyouhavedevelopedthroughthiscourse in accessing, managing, and interpreting data. It will also provide anopportunity to discuss in depth how the determinants of health can lead todifferences in health status across population groups. Please refer to the feedbackgivenonyourPortfolioTask3submissionwhencompletingthisassessment.
Theassessmentaddressesthefollowingcourseobjectives:
CO1.Discussburdenofdiseaseinthenationalandinternationalcontext.
CO2. Compare and contrast health status (risk, prevalence and outcomes) acrosslocal, national and international populations as a result of, social, cultural andenvironmentalfactors.
CO3. Identify and describe the basis for differences in health status with particularemphasisonAboriginalPeoplesanddisadvantagedpopulations.
CO4. Identify and describe current and future challenges to health and health caresystems.
CO5.Demonstrate developing foundation skills in academic writing, referencing, sourcinginformation, andcreating, manipulatingandinterpretingdataandgraphs.

- Createasummarytableforyourdata
GuidedbytheReportTemplate,createatabletopresentsummarystatistics(countandproportion),accordingtoagegroups,foreachofthethreepopulationgroups.
Theagegroupsbywhichyoushouldpresentyourdataare:
18-24years
25-34years
35-44years
45yearsandover
Yourtablemustincludeatitle,datasetreferences,andcolumn/rowlabels.PresentallvaluestoONE(1)decimalplace,andincludeunitswherenecessary.
- Health&Societystudentcohort
Refertothe2022Health&SocietyCohortDatafile.Toobtaincount(n)andproportion(%), perform calculations as taught in previous weeks by using the COUNTIF andCOUNTIFSformulasasappropriate.
- Australianpopulation
Refer to the 2020-21 ABS National Health Survey Data file. To obtain count (n) andproportion(%),nocalculationsarerequired.Youshouldidentifythecorrectvaluesinthedatasetandcopythemdirectlytoyoursummarytable.
- AboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderpopulation
Refer to the 2018-19 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey Data file. Toobtain count (n) and proportion (%) for the 18-24 years, 25-34 years, and 35-44 yearsagegroups,nocalculationsarerequired.Youshouldidentifythecorrectvaluesinthedatasetandcopythemdirectlytoyoursummarytable.
For the 45 years and over age group you will need to combine data by adding thecounts(estimates)forthe45-54yearsagegroupandthe55yearsandoveragegroup.Then,tocalculatetheproportionforthe45yearsandoveragegroup,dividethecountby the sum of the total persons in each of the two age groups (last row in the sheetTotal persons) and multiply by 100 to get the %. For the % Total (?18 years), use thenon-age-standardisedfigure.
- Presentyoursummarydatainagraph
In Excel, create ONE (1) column graph in Excel presenting the prevalence (%) ofsmokingineachpopulation, byagegroup.TransferyourgraphintotheTemplatefile, ensuring there is an appropriate title, data set references, labels for both the axes,andakey/legend.
- Describeandcompareprevalenceofsmokingacrossthethreepopulationgroups
In approximately 300 words, describe the data presented in your table and graph, andcompare the three population groups. This section should include a description ofany similarities and/or differences in the prevalence of smoking between the Healthand Society student cohort, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population, and thetotalAustralianpopulation.DoNOTincludeaninterpretationofthedata,norpossiblerational/justificationforanydifferenceinthissection.
- DiscusstheroleofdeterminantsofhealthANDhealthliteracy
In approximately 700 words, discuss the 1) social, 2) cultural, and 3) environmentaldeterminants of health which potentially contribute to differences in the prevalence ofsmoking between the three populations. For your discussion, you may find it helpfulto focus on one determinant for each category (e.g., income (social determinant),discrimination (cultural determinant), and remoteness (environmental determinant)).Aspartofyourdiscussion,alsoaddresstherelevanceofhealthliteracytodifferencesinsmokingprevalenceobservedacrossthethreepopulationgroups.
YourdiscussionshouldaddressALLTHREEpopulations, andnotfocusonjustoneor two. This section must also be informed by at least two (2) appropriate peerreviewedreferences.
