This assessment consists of four tasks:

Task A – Evaluating emotional responses of co-workers.

Task B – Team emotional intelligence development plan.

Task C – Reflection on implementation. 

Task D – Improving EI in a negative staff member

During this assessment, you are required to demonstrate the skills and knowledge needed to:

  • demonstrate emotional intelligence in relation to at least two different work tasks
  • promote development of emotion intelligence in others on at least one occasion.
  • analyse and document interactions with co-workers
  • develop and implement plans for responding to emotional expressions
  • apply techniques that promote flexibility in interactions with others and show consideration for the emotions of others
  • application of emotional intelligence attributes such as relationship management
  • methods to develop emotional intelligence in others
  • emotional intelligence principles and strategies
  • emotional intelligence in the context of building workplace relationships.

Task A – Evaluating emotional responses of co-workers.

A1: Analyse

Q1. Based on the issues in the case study: 

  1. Analyse and document the different challenges that the team are facing
  2. Determine action plans for these issues and how best the team can increase their emotional intelligence to address and mitigate these issues

Task B – Team emotional intelligence development plan

B1: Role play

In this role play, you will have a round-table style discussion with two members of the team. You will analyse and summarise employee’s personality profiles, think about how you can create opportunities for these colleagues to share their thoughts and feelings.

Also think about how you, as your team leaders can show consideration for the team when making decisions. Identify, in collaboration with the two employees what areas they need to work on, why they need to be worked on, and think about what kind of actions the team members can take to improve them. Discuss how you can improve your own emotional intelligence to help your team.

You will need to do the following:

  • apply techniques that indicate flexibility and adaptability in dealing with others in the workplace
  • apply techniques that show consideration for the emotions of others when making decisions
  • consult with relevant stakeholders and identify improvement areas for own emotional intelligence
  • work with your team members to develop an emotional intelligence development plan by completing the two Team Development tables.

You will be required to create a digital recording (video) of yourself completing the role play and submit this as evidence for assessment. Instructions for submitting digital recordings (video) are provided on the Assessment Support page in OpenSpace. You must ensure you have read and complied with these requirements when creating and submitting this assessment, including identifying yourself and obtaining consent from participants. Save this file as: [student name]_[student number]_[assessment#].

Take notes of what is discussed as you will complete the Team Development table for each co-worker after the role play.

Your Assessor will observe a recording of the role play and complete the Practical Skills Checklist located in Appendix 1: Task A – Practical Skills Checklist. Please ensure that your role play is no longer than 10 minutes.

During the role-play, you will need to demonstrate the skills and knowledge needed to:

  • apply techniques that indicate flexibility and adaptability in dealing with others in the workplace
  • apply techniques that show consideration for the emotions of others when making decisions
  • consult with relevant stakeholders and identify improvement areas for own emotional intelligence
  • work with your team members to develop an emotional intelligence development plan by completing the two Team Development tables.

You will be involved in a scenario/role play that involves complex interactions with real people.

The role play will include the following people:

  • Yourself – playing the role of the employee. 
  • Person B – playing the role of the fellow employee.
  • Person C – playing the role of another co-worker. 

Steps:

Prior to the role play you are required to: 

  1. Gather equipment as outlined above.
  2. Provide the Character Instructions to anyone playing a role in the assessment so they can prepare and become familiar with the requirements of the role. See Appendix 2 Character Instructions.
  3. Read all the instructions for the role play and associated documentation carefully and completely.
  4. Ensure you have read and complied with instructions for submitting digital recordings when creating and submitting this assessment, including identifying yourself and obtaining consent from participants – provided in the Assessment Support page in OpenSpace.

During the role play you are required to:

  1. Summarise both employees’ personality profiles discussed (emotional responses, beliefs, identified strengths and weaknesses).
  2. Think about how you can create opportunities for these colleagues to express their thoughts and feelings in the work team that best suits them.
  3. How can you as their team leader show consideration to these team members when making decisions that affect them?
  4. Identify what areas they need to work on, why they need to be worked on, and think about what kind of actions the team members can take to improve them.

Throughout the role play, make sure you:

  1. Respond appropriately to the emotional states and cues of your team members by being flexible and adaptable, modifying your approach as relevant.
  2. Create an inclusive atmosphere by way of speech and interaction. 
  3. Demonstrate consideration, empathy and acknowledgement of their feelings and perspectives.
  4. Create opportunities to express themselves: their ideas, thoughts and feelings about your plans.
  5. Demonstrate effective communication skills including:
  • Speaking clearly and concisely. 
  • Using non-verbal communication to assist with understanding. 
  • Asking questions to identify required information. 
  • Responding to questions as required. 
  • Using active listening techniques to confirm understanding.

B2: Complete the team development table

You are the team leader for the group that you were in for the round table discussion.

  • Develop these plans based on the information you learnt during the round table discussion. 
  • Ensure that actions will help this team member to meet the organisational and team goals. 
  • You will develop these plans based on your observations during the round table and not in discussion with your team members.
  • You will need to implement at least 2 of the activities that you have planned as part of the plan development, so make sure it’s something realistic that can be completed.
  • Complete one for each team member.

Task C – Implementation and Reflection 

Based on what you have learnt from the discussions you have decided to implement a team building activity and a new collaborative work tool, to assist people with their work roles and responsibilities.

C1: Email to set up tasks

Q1. Use the template below to create an email to staff to inform them of a team building exercise, include logistical information like date and time etc. Be sure to include the rationale for the team building and how they can benefit from it.

C2: User Guide

This task involves developing a short instruction guide on a collaboration tool of your choice. Some examples include, Slack, Trello, G-suite.

To complete this assessment task:

  1. Make sure that you include information on setting up and using the tool. Also include the benefits of the tool.

Remember to save the file as you go so you don’t lose your work.

C3: Reflection

Complete the following tables on the two activities implemented and reflect on the process of developing emotional intelligence within the team.

Task D – Improving EI in a negative staff member 

D1: Role play

In this role play you will be having a conversation to assist a negative staff member in understanding the effects of personal behaviour and emotions on others in the workplace, thus improving their emotional intelligence. You will email them after with details on the plan of action. 

You will be required to create a digital recording (video) of yourself completing the role play and submit this as evidence for assessment. Instructions for submitting digital recordings (video) are provided in the Assessment Support page in Open Space. You must ensure you have read and complied with these requirements when creating and submitting this assessment, including identifying yourself and obtaining consent from participants. Save this file as: [student name]_[student number]_[assessment#]

Your Assessor will observe you during the role play and complete the Practical Skills Checklist located in Appendix 3

During the role play you will need to demonstrate the skills and knowledge needed to:

  • assist your staff member in understanding the effects of personal behaviour and emotions on others in the workplace.

You will be involved a scenario/role play that involves complex interactions with real people. The interaction should last no more than five minutes.
