Instructions:

Part 1 - Assessing & Periodisation (30%)

(i) Aerobic Assessment

Select an endurance or sport-team athlete and perform a needs analysis of their sport/event citing relevant literature.

Outline the athlete’s goals, using SMART goal setting approach. State the goal, target date and action required, you will need to rationalise and prioritise them.

Complete a brief health screening and informed consent. Assess the athlete’s aerobic status by performing a maximal aerobic speed (MAS) test or critical power (CP) test. Make contact with the athlete to arrange a suitable time to perform the MAS/CP testing. From the MAS/CP testing result design two sessions: a long and short interval session, include the appropriate prescription and indicate the phase of training. Using MAS/CP test calculate the appropriate training zones. Critically comment on the use of MAS/CP training, the physiology that underpins it and the effectiveness of training zones for prescribing aerobic exercise.

(ii) Periodisation

Using Excel spreadsheet create a detail peridisation plan for the athlete. You will need to obtain dates and schedules of competition(s) from your athlete. This will assist in designing the plan, which should include, but not exclusive, training phases, months, dates, mesocycles, microcycles, competitions/events and the duration of these. Include other key important dates. Indicate on the periodised plan where the emphasis/prioritisation occurs during the various phases for conditioning, technical, nutritional, psychological aspects (you might want to use colour shading or indicate the actual frequency of training). Depending on your Excel skills you may also want to indicate volume and intensity.

From the periodised plan devise two microcycles from different training phases (i.e., general and specific preparation) of the periodised plan. From one microcycle and detail the conditioning sessions during that week with the appropriate prescription. Using relevant research literature provide a detail justification of the periodisation plan, the mesocycles, microcycles and what tapering strategy you will implement.

Part 2 - Practical (5%)

Provide a video recording of you explaining/instructing the MAS/CP session. Then ask for feedback from the athlete and use the reflection questions (see below) to guide your responses.

Reflect on your session this will test, probe and verify your knowledge; challenge your assumptions; prompt you to think through the consequences of your session. Ask yourself what went well, what didn’t – why or why not? Were there any limitations? If you were to do it again what would you change? Why? Ensure that the video is linked together and uploaded to Youtube and provide a url as a hyperlink in your assignment.
