    CSE1CFX

  • Country :

    Australia

Task 1

The idea of using a web hosting platform instead of cloud-based IT solutions, has been around at the University for some time. In this task, you, as a cloud computing expert, are required to make a comprehensive comparison between the web hosting platforms and cloud services in context of scalability, cost, security, availability, level of control, and local storage (Australia based). You need to make appropriate justification that why the cloud is more suitable for the university’s requirements.

Task 2

Now that you made a thorough comparison between the cloud-based infrastructures and hosting platforms, it would be best to choose the vendor as there are many companies offering cloud services. Depending on your response to Task 1, you need to compare cloud vendors to identify the most suited vendor for the Online University of Australia. You will need to consider the Online University of Australia requirements to identify the most suitable vendor.

Examples of possible cloud vendors include:

  • Amazon Web Services https://aws.amazon.com/
  • Google Cloud Services https://cloud.google.com/
  • Microsoft Azure https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/
  • Linode https://www.linode.com/
  • Vultr https://www.vultr.com/

Task 3

Based on your recommendation of a cloud provider, you must calculate the annual cost of running Moodle in this environment. In your response, you may have to make some assumptions e.g. how much storage will you need. In this regard, try to make an educated guess by considering the storage needs per subject. The university requires space for storing students' work like assessments and drafts, and also need space for storing lecture content, slides, and assessment tasks.

For the cloud resources cost estimation you need to include disk (storage) size ,memory requirement and processing. For memory, the Moodle documentation should contain a rough estimate of how many active students a single GB of memory could support. This figure can then be used to calculate memory requirements. You will need to make a calculation for the number of active students at any given time as purchasing resources for the total number of enrolled students would be too expensive. You should also include reference to ancillary services such as RDS, VPC, and IAM in your response.

The following data may be used to calculate the storage, memory and compute resources, you may also make calculated assumption wherever necessary in the calculations (mention any assumptions you do make)

  • Degree Programs: 4
  • Number of subjects per degree program: 12
  • Number of weeks in a semester: 12
  • Average content (video lectures, slide etc) size per week: 450 MB
  • Additional average content size per subject: 300 MB
  • Average number of assessments per subject: 4
  • Number of active students: 15% (Accessing the online resources at a given time)

For this task, you can also make use of the AWS cost calculator.

Task 4

The next consideration for the Online University of Australia is the migration of their local Moodle environment to the chosen provider. The university is concerned about the student experience and makes no wish to cause any inconvenience. You are asked to provide advice on how the move will take place and how much time will be required. Describe the step-by-step process for moving to the chosen Cloud or hosting platform and include any best practices that may assist in the migration process.

Task 5

Apart from their Moodle learning management system, it has been determined that the university will need to move the following artefacts online (to the cloud specifically).

Resource requirements:

1. Space for storing 10 TB of lecture videos.
2. Space for storing thousands of images and other digital artefacts.
3. Space for storing 3000 Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents. Note: Some of these documents are updated daily by many authors.
4. Space for storing current student and staff records.
5. Space for storing past student and staff records.
6. The university is required by law to store all data locally (within Australia)

Task 5.1 AWS offers many types of storage such as S3, EFS, EBS, and RDS. Which storage services would you recommended based on the resource requirements mentioned above?

Task 5.2 AWS offers many ways of uploading data to the cloud. The university has a 100/40 Mbps Internet connection which can be used for uploading the data. AWS offers other ways, too, like Snowball and Transfer acceleration. Which one do you think the university should use, and how much would that cost? The university would wish to keep an eye on the costs but want that the upload process is completed in months.

Task 5.3 The university has 100 international students located offsite in Asia and 150 in North America. Is there a way to reduce latency and improve their overall experience?

Task 6 You should make use of AWS documentation to respond to the following sub-tasks.

Task 6.1 Suggest any three important steps that the university can take to reduce the annual/monthly cost of their cloud resources, support your answer with appropriate examples or references.

Task 6.2 AWS promises a very high level of reliability, but what happens when its services break down? Using the AWS Service Level Agreement (SLA), identify the liabilities and compensation for all of Online University of Australia's services.

Task 6.3 Identify the best practices for securing a user’s data/resources on the cloud. Use AWS as an example to support your answer.

Task 6.4 AWS employs the rule of “least privilege”. What is this and how does it help with security?

Task 7
