In this assignment you will choose one article and provide a critical overview of its research questions and focus, the theoretical framework, the research method(s) used, and the key findings. Articles are available via the MQ library multi-search.

OPTION 1: Timko, Peter & Van Melik, Rianne. 2021. Being a Deliveroo Rider: Practices of Platform Labor in Nijegen and Berlin. Journal of Contemporary Ethnography 50(4): 497-523.  ß I CANT FIND THE DOCUMENT

OPTION 2: Martinez, Francisco. 2018. Analogue Photo Booths in Berlin. Anthropology & Photography No. 9.

GUIDELINES:  The idea is to question the scholarly knowledge collected and presented in the text and to make a reasonable judgement of its research design and findings.

This is what your review should include:

  1. A summary of the qualitative study that informs the article you choose to examine. (Approximately 400-500 words) Consider the following questions:
  • What is the topic area? What is the aim and focus of the study?
  • Identify the theoretical paradigm/approach used by the author(s).
  • What does the author seek to find out? What kinds of questions are being asked? [what / who / why / how many / how much]
  • What research methods have been used? What are the sources of evidence? How was the data collected?
  1. Critical evaluation the study (400-500 words)

Consider the following questions:

  • How well has the study achieved its aims?
  • How appropriate are its methods for reaching these goals? Have the researchers chosen the most effective way to study the topic? Do they provide a clear description of how the data collection was done?
  • Does the researcher make credible claims based on the qualitative evidence presented?
  • Is the significance of the research project clear?

Ultimately, we would like you to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the study.

Avoid using the above questions as sub-headings. The questions should inform your review, which should be presented in an essay format, i.e. introduction - body paragraphs - conclusion. Make sure to have a logical progression of ideas and transitions between sentences and paragraphs.

Marking criteria:

  • CONTENT: Your review will be assessed based on how well you address the questions outlined above.
  • APPROPRIATE SOURCES: While you will be making your own assessment of the chosen study, we expect you to engage with unit readings to inform your reflections. There is NO minimum number of sources to use.
  • CLARITY: Clarity of expression and written language; correct spelling and punctuation
  • REFERENCING: There is no set referencing style to follow. We will look for how consistently you apply your chosen referencing style.
  • FORMATTING:Use 12 font and double or 1,5 spacing.

Please make sure to include the word count in your review.
