Criteria 1: Ideas and Concepts

Evidence of investigation or a research based approach to creative practice in a Fine Art context; an awareness

of the scope of the subject matter chosen for investigation, knowledge of relevant precedents and the current

context for such practice.

HD: Has an exceptional understanding of a research based approach to creative practice. Able to generate

ideas and understanding independently beyond the set parameters. Able to describe and apply methods and

procedures to a exceptional level. Exceptionally well developed and broad knowledge of relevant precedents.

D: Has a highly developed understanding of a research based approach to creative practice. Able to deal with

several connected aspects of the subject matter and how they fit together. Able to describe and apply methods

and procedures to an excellent level. Has a highly developed and broad knowledge of relevant precedents.

C: Has a developed understanding of a research based approach to creative practice. Able to deal with several

aspects of the subject matter under investigation but these are disconnected. Able to describe and apply

methods and procedures to a proficient level. Has some knowledge of relevant precedents.

P: Has a basic understanding of a research based approach to creative practice. Able to deal with one single

aspect of the subject matter under investigation and make obvious connections. Limited ability to describe and

apply methods, procedures and relevant precedents.

N: Has an underdeveloped understanding of a research based approach to creative practice. Does not have an

awareness of the subject matter under investigation, or relevant precedents and the current context for relevant

practices. Uses irrelevant information and/or have no critical discernment.

Criteria 2: Technique

The selection of, and competency with, techniques and materials appropriate to the field of investigation or

research topic under investigation. Presented work meets the specified presentation format/requirements;

required level of proficiency of skill and technique.

HD: Has an exceptional understanding of techniques and materials presented and has been perceived from

many different perspectives. Able to apply these techniques in an exceptional manner to the topic under

investigation.

D: Has a highly developed understanding of techniques and materials presented and their relations to one

another is evident to form a whole. Able to apply these techniques in an excellent manner to the topic under

investigation.

C: Has a developed understanding of several techniques and materials presented, but connections between

these techniques are disconnected. Able to apply these techniques proficiently to the topic under investigation.

P: Has a basic understanding of techniques and materials presented. Able to apply these techniques in a

satisfactory manner to the topic under investigation.

N: Has not demonstrated understanding of techniques and materials presented. Not able to apply these

techniques to the topic under investigation.

Criteria 3: Progress

Evidence in the work to date of a sustained investigation of the initial premise and where necessary the

expansion or re-definition of the parameters of the inquiry.

HD: Has progressed the work to an exceptional level, addressing all feedback appropriately and perceiving its

structure from many different perspectives and transferring ideas to new areas. Has presented a

comprehensive and refined range of documentation strategies across the entire production that is

accompanied by extended self-reflection and annotation.

D: Has progressed the work to an excellent level, making good use of feedback in the development and

consolidation of several connected aspects of the work. Has presented a consolidated range of documentation

strategies of both developmental process and finished artworks accompanied by rigorous self-reflection and

annotation.

C: Has progressed the work to a proficient level, making appropriate use of feedback in the development and

consolidation of several disconnected aspects of the work. Has presented a range of documentation strategies

of both developmental process and finished artwork accompanied by moderate self-reflection and annotation.

P: Has progressed the work to a satisfactory level, making limited use of feedback to develop at least one

consolidated aspect of their work. Has presented limited documentation of both developmental process and

finished artwork with limited self-reflection and annotation.

N: Has not progressed in their inquiry beyond the description of the task. Has not demonstrated progress in

understanding the task and/or uses irrelevant information or has misunderstood the task.

Criteria 4: Resolution

The ability to formally resolve ideas in a way communicable to the assessors, as appropriate to the line of

enquiry undertaken and level of completion reached.

HD: Has produced an exceptionally well resolved work demonstrating their ability to generate an artwork;

understand it through multiple perspectives; within the given parameters.

D: Has a highly resolved understanding between several aspects of their work and how they might fit together

to form a whole. The student can competently analyse the resolved artwork.

C: Has successfully resolved several aspects of their work but these aspects remain disconnected. The student

is able to describe processes and ideas in relation to resolving the respective artwork.

P: Has demonstrated a satisfactory resolution of the work and made obvious connections about one aspect of

their project.

N: Has not demonstrated an understanding of how to resolve the work and has not used relevant information

and/or misses the point of the task altogether and/or is unable to make their ideas communicable to their

assessors.

Demonstration of experimentation, originality and innovation in relation to the precedents and parameters

identified for their practice through sustained exploration of possibilities.

identified for their practice through a comprehensive exploration of possibilities.

D: Has demonstrated an excellent level of experimentation in relation to the precedents and parameters

identified for their practice through a sustained exploration of possibilities.

C: Has demonstrated a proficient level of experimentation. They adequately respond to precedents and

parameters through a consistent exploration of possibilities.

P: Has demonstrated a satisfactory level of experimentation and responds in a limited capacity to the given

parameters.

N: Has not demonstrated experimentation, originality or innovation in relation to the precedents and

parameters. Has not identified innovative thinking for their practice through a sustained exploration of
