You have been asked to prepare a business report, evaluating the approaches to leadership and management within your organisation.

As part of your report, you must evaluate each of the following, in relation to your organisation:

  • The impact of leadership and management on organisational behaviour
  • The likely impact of leadership approaches on job satisfaction
  • Sources of power within the organisation and how these are used
  • The importance of equality and diversity policies within the organization

Your report must include recommendations for improvement.

Prepare a business report

Whilst the task asks you to prepare a business report, it is important to bear in mind that this is an academic assignment and not a business report. As such, make sure that you write your assignment in the 3rd Person. Also, if your organisation does have a standard report template, do not use it as it is not appropriate for this academic assignment.

Also, remember that you are being asked to evaluate approaches to leadership and management within your organisation, so it is really important that you always relate the content back to your organisation.

  1. What is the difference between leadership and management? Does your organisation have ‘Managers’ or ‘Leaders’, and how do you know? Is there a model you could use to help you identify whether you have managers or leaders, and how might this impact on organisational behaviour?
  2. Are there any specific factors or forces that could affect the leadership style of your organisation’s leaders? And what effect might this have on organisational behaviour?
  3. What internal factors could affect organisational behaviour? What model could you use to analyse these internal factors?
  4. What external factors could affect organisational behaviour? What model could you use to analyse these external environmental factors?
  5. Are there any gaps / areas for development, and how do you think the current situation could be improved?

Evaluate the likely impact of leadership approaches on job satisfaction.

  1. What does job satisfaction mean in the context of your organisation? Is there an opportunity here for you to include some empirical research on the features of job satisfaction in your organisation (for example, could you develop a questionnaire to help you understand what job satisfaction means to staff?)
  2. How could leadership approaches impact on job satisfaction?
  3. How concerned are your organisation’s leaders about you and your wellbeing? Which model could you introduce to demonstrate whether your leader’s approach is people-centred or task centred?
  4. Are there any gaps / areas for development, and how do you think the current situation couldbe improved?

Evaluate the sources of power within the organisation and how these are used.

  1. Who are your organisation’s stakeholders (and which model could you use to help you to analyse the organisation’s stakeholders)?
  2. What are the main sources of individual power within your organisation, and can you provide examples? Which model could you use to demonstrate the different sources of power?

Evaluate the importance of equality and diversity policies within the organization.

  1. Does your organisation have an equality & diversity policy?
  2. What are the benefits of cultural diversity in organisations?
  3. Are there any gaps / areas for development, and how do you think the current situation could be improved?

Your report must include recommendations for improvement.

You MUST include recommendations in your assignment.

Think about the gaps / areas for improvement that you have identified in the sections above, and how you could use these areas for improvement to develop your assignment’s recommendations.

Really focus on what the assignment task is asking. Try not to digress or get distracted with things that don’t answer the task. Always ask yourself

  1. Has what I’ve written answered the question? and
  2. Has what I’ve written added value to the assignment?

If the answer to either of these questions is no, really think about whether you should keep it in the assignment.
