Task:
"Reports are used to help make decisions or account for actions. Reports use research to make recommendations for action" (QUT cite/write, 2017, para. 2).
You are required to prepare the initial part of the final research report which responds to the scenario below. Your report must be based on relevant and current academic secondary research only, using resources accessed via the QUT library catalogue. You will use feedback on this task to produce a higher quality final research report.
Scenario:
Society acknowledges that education can greatly improve the quality of life for both communities and individuals. This knowledge allows people to see the world through new eyes which opens up previously unknown possibilities. Seeking higher education can develop this insight and reveal potential opportunities for future success. Furthermore, students should choose their preferred field of study based on their academic strengths, interests and future career goals. The 21st century has brought about an increase in the number of students seeking higher education opportunities in Australia, particularly due to the wide array of disciplines available at Australian universities.
In order to succeed in an Australian university, international students need to learn content knowledge. However, just as importantly students must also develop skills related to their chosen discipline. Additionally, research by Emblen-Perry (2019) confirms the value of integrating universal skills when encouraging student’s academic success. Many skills may be generic and therefore cross-disciplinary, while others are specific to particular faculties and must be developed to successfully complete the course of study.
QUT College management has contracted you to investigate four academic skills which Diploma students require to be successful in their chosen faculty. Your analysis requires you, as the researcher, to argue why your selected academic skills are the most important for students in your faculty. As part of your investigation the client, Mr Ken Beutel, Director QUT College, requires recommendations which will identify how these skills should be delivered to Diploma students.

- Explain the context and purpose of the report and justify using secondary evidence the importance of the semester topic. (1.0 Introduction).
- Identify 4 academic skills (subtopics) that students require to be successful in your faculty area. Within each of the subtopics, identify one methodto show how students should perform this subtopic skill at university and justify using secondary evidence its importance for student faculty success. (2.0 Discussion).
- Reflect on your work and gather peer feedback to improve the quality of your submission.
- Show a draft of this assessment item the week before the due date.
