Task Description

The task includes the delivery of a Matlab MIMO-OFDMA simulator for downlink communications and a brief report describing the simulator and discussing the results. Students can reuse the Matlab components developed in the tutorial classes, particularly the one in Tutorial 5. The developed Matlabcode and a short associated report (describing the code and discuss the results) need to be submitted for this assessment. The format of the short report is provided in the appendix.

The common system setup and parameters are as follows:

  • The number of Tx and Rx antennas:2;
  • OFDMA for two users
  • Total number of subcarriers: Nsubc=128;
  • Pilots subcarriers with indexes (11 12 26 27 53 54 76 77 103 104 118 119];
  • Length of Cyclic prefix: Lcp=16;
  • Guard band equivalent to 11 subcarriers, with indexes [60:70], in the two edges of the band;
  • Put zero value at the DC subcarrier;
  • Zero forcing equalization at the receiver;
  • Assume perfect synchronization and channel estimation;
  • Modulation: 4QAM; no FEC coding.

Parameters specific to each student are as follows:

  • Simulate a frequency selective Rayleigh fading model (complex Gaussian). Number of multipaths equals to Lp+2; where Lp is the 8-th digit of your student ID;
  • Number of used subcarrier for one user to be Ls+10; where Ls is the first and second digits of your student ID, and the other user occupies the rest usable data subcarriers. Use the subband(localized) subcarrier allocation scheme (students can decide the actual locations by yourselves);
  • Use a free-space path loss model to generate path loss and add to the channel model. Link distance equal to d+1, where d is the third digit of your student ID, in km.

At the least, plot the BER against various signal to noise power ratio (SNR) values ([15: 5: 40] dB). For each SNR value, the simulation should be run over Loops=500 loops/trials.

Students can decide other non-specified configurations and parameters by yourselves.

The simulator and report shall be put in a .zip file and submitted on Canvas. Due: Week 8 Online submission. 11:59pm Friday of Week 8 (12th April 2024).

Detailed Marking Criteria

The total marks for this assessment are divided as follows:

Simulator (15 marks)

  • Accuracy of the channel model (2 marks)
  • Accuracy of the subcarrier allocation (2 marks)
  • Accuracy of the transmitted signals (2 marks)
  • Accuracy of the received signals (2 marks)
  • Accuracy of the equalization and demodulation (2 marks)
  • Quality of the overall code and simulation results (5 marks)

Report (5 marks)

  • Description of the simulator (3 marks)
  • Presentation of simulation results (2 marks)
