The assignment is worth 30% of the assessment – 3000 words maximum, excluding diagrams,tables, etc.

It is interesting to note that all the other related studied units culminate in the finale, the building construction i.e., the product. Buildings are unique products purchased, in that, they are manufactured before the clients’ eyes as distinct from other consumer purchases that are completed before being purchased e.g., cars and clothing.

Consequently, the client can have more input into the product production i.e., plan and specification, and during construction. This is particularly the case when documentation is insufficient or incomplete leading to possible disputes.

 The assignment task is in accordance with project/construction management principles i.e., Time, Quality, Resources, and Cost, and relates to a topic listed in the first PowerPoints No 12, or as agreed with me.

 As the construction manager, you would initially be more than likely to be given the task of managing one of the construction technical processes e.g., demolition, underpinning, core construction, etc., as distinct from the total management of the build. Using project principles, but NOT restatement of PM principles again, you need to know the technical specification details to manage your technical job effectively and efficiently i.e., part of the construction process.

 Select a component of construction using the “latest technology” relating to a high-rise building as your assignment from the topic listed on PP No 12 of my PowerPoint presentation 1, or other topics as approved by me. N.B. students cannot do the same topics. Consequently, you will need to focus on technical detail specifically and quality details on your chosen topic. Your detailed assignment needs to review previous and current literature relating to the topic and include a review of the literature and any associated building legislation, manufacturer standards, Australian Standards, Workplace Codes, etc.

 The assignment answers MUST be well written and paraphrased (marks will be deducted for direct copying without using Harvard quotations), punctuated, or paraphrased from the literature to make a complete sentence and correctly cited using the Harvard citation system. It's acceptable to use software like Grammarly or similar to ensure your writing is correct. All construction examples MUST be fully detailed and correctly labelled. Practical construction examples should be included and be fully detailed. These examples can be plans or parts of plans, detailed sketches, fully detailed photographs, or internet photos. Photograph if used, must be fully and correctly labelled and referenced. Marks will be awarded for current examples correctly cited, text, journal, or current onsite examples. Reference to the appropriate Building Code of Australian, Australian Standards, safety codes of practice, and any other text must be included wherever possible. Additionally, all assignment work MUST be fully referenced using the Harvard citation system. see CQU Harvard Referencing Style

The first page MUST have this unit name and number, your name, and student number (Arial 24). The second page must be a table of content with all, acronyms, tables, figures, etc., All pages must be numbered at the bottom. The last page/s will be a list of references. The assignment MUST be word-processed in Arial, the main heading in Arial 14, Subheading Arial 12, and the body of the text in Arial 11.

 There is various word pre-formatting system that you can use and while these take some initial time to set up in the long term, they will save you considerable time when writing various assignment (see WORD-FORMATTING, this document can be googled). This specific guide is not compulsory, but you MUST set out your assignment to include the following: Arial, formatting page numbers, using chapter templates, footnotes, images, and figures, etc., and all correctly formatted and conforming to the Harvard citation system.
