Introduction (a heading for introduction is not required)

A good introduction is pivotal to the essay. Every introduction should start with an overarching statement about the subject in general and the topic in particular. Next, the introduction should start to focus your paper on the topic at hand. It may be useful here to define key concepts. The third element of the introduction should be a statement/sentence which states either a) what will be discussed or b) the main argument of the paper. Lastly, a good introduction outlines the structure of the essay. This allows the reader to know how the paper is organised and what order to expect the information in. Where you introduce or discuss ideas that are not your own in the introduction, references should be included.   

Hint: For your second essay assignment, you will want to provide some context for the paper that highlights why the issue is a topical one. It will be useful to define relevant terms (for example depending on the topic, these may be; what a social inequality is, what drug use refers to and the types of drugs that are problematic or relevant to the legalisation debate, or what the term sexual practices refers to). This second essay is an argumentative essay, so you need to make your position clear in the essay (e.g.: This essay will argue…). You will then want to provide an outline of your essay so the reader can follow your logical.

Body (headings for the body of your essay are not required)

The body expands on the points outlined in the introduction and in the order listed. This is the section of the essay where the concepts/ideas/arguments are expanded. Academic literature, research and theory is explained here and used to evidence and support the author’s argument. All ideas should be referenced using APA (6th Edition) or ECU Referencing Guide formatting.   

Each part of the essay structure (provided in the introduction) should be dealt with in one or more paragraphs, depending on the importance of the content, the size/detail of the concept being discussed, or the amount of supporting literature importance. The first line of each paragraph should be indented. Each paragraph is like a mini essay with an opening sentence to highlight what will be discussed and a closing sentence that shows the reader the take home message for that paragraph. Each paragraph should be written in a way that makes the ‘story’ flow in a logical way for the reader.

Hint: For your second essay assignment, your body should focus on explaining the selected topic in more detail. Journal references and research will be most useful in providing an argument for or against the particular issue you have selected. Theories can be used in this essay, however they are less important. Contemporary literature will be more helpful to you. Remember to link each paragraph back to your argument so that you create a ‘flow of ideas’ and a cohesive paper. You are welcome to use Australian and international research as part of your discussion. 

Conclusion (a heading for the conclusion is not required)

The conclusion is where you pull all of your arguments together.  You summarise and briefly restate the key points or arguments outlined in the body of your essay which then leads to a clear conclusion regarding the topic. Do not introduce any new ideas or concepts; only recap on your key points or argument. It is important to signpost your conclusion (as headings often are not used for an essay). To do this, you can started your final paragraph with “In conclusion…”

Hint: For your second essay assignment, your conclusion will need to reiterate key discussion points raised and the key themes to your argument. You should finish with a clear statement (that is supported by the body of your essay) which answers the question
