ABSTRACT
The use of mobile devices for the provision of financial services in developing countries are currently of increased level of importance particularly in communities that lack access to the traditional commercial banking institutions
The study aimed to examine the factors that hinder the adoption of mobile payment services among SMEs in Ghana and also compare and contrast the mobile payment initiative in Ghana to a technology advanced country, China. The study proposed a four dimensional factors based on the findings from the literature review to understand the challenges of adopting mobile payment. Categorically, the main factors are institutions, technology, consumers intentions and business unit or SMEs.
A questionnaire was design to solicit information from the participants. The data were taken using Wechat survey application. Excel and SPSS were used to screen and analysis the data obtained.
This study revealed that business readiness, technology level of SMEs in Ghana, employees level of education on mobile payment and the least is size and type of business form major obstacles that slow the acceptance of mobile payment. Technology factors: network connection among payment partners, reliable software applications, technological level of payment facilities and compatibility of Payment facilities available. Major external factors revealed are ICT infrastructure. Consumer factors: perceived trust and security, Perceived ease and usefulness and familiarity and complexity to users. This study revealed that one of the main success factor is high technology and literacy rate in China. Other factors include acceptance by SME and government, usefulness of M-payment over cash, quality m-payment research, commitment, support and policy, speed and access to internet, and reliable payment partners.
