Unit Description

This unit aims to examine the global social, environmental and political elements of the public health of populations. The major thematic areas are: globalisation and health; international development & human rights; environmental and social change and health. * Note: Please enrol in the elective PHM554 Public Health Economics and Decision Making if you would like to focus on health economics.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit a student should be able to:

  1. Recognize and examine the link between globalization and health
  2. Identify and apply various measures of health and disease and assess their validity
  3. Explain why health inequity is an essential element to address in health service planning and delivery
  4. Examine and explain the influences of global political, financial and social forces on the global environment and health
  5. Identify the key actors in global health and outline how they can cooperate to address critical global health issues
  6. Consider future challenges associated with the unfinished agenda in global health and plan strategies to address them
  7. Demonstrate advanced public health skills such as strategic thinking, clear communication and cooperation
