Unit Description
This unit aims to examine the global social, environmental and political elements of the public health of populations. The major thematic areas are: globalisation and health; international development & human rights; environmental and social change and health. * Note: Please enrol in the elective PHM554 Public Health Economics and Decision Making if you would like to focus on health economics.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit a student should be able to:
- Recognize and examine the link between globalization and health
- Identify and apply various measures of health and disease and assess their validity
- Explain why health inequity is an essential element to address in health service planning and delivery
- Examine and explain the influences of global political, financial and social forces on the global environment and health
- Identify the key actors in global health and outline how they can cooperate to address critical global health issues
- Consider future challenges associated with the unfinished agenda in global health and plan strategies to address them
- Demonstrate advanced public health skills such as strategic thinking, clear communication and cooperation
