(i) a design manifesto, and

(ii) a proposal for a speculative design piece that relates to and expresses the ideas in your manifesto.

These will be based on the theories and texts explored during the semester and should express your views on design, the future, design ethics and design consequences. They are independent pieces that complement each other: The Manifesto describes your personal views and standpoint on design for the future, and The Speculative Design aims to demonstrate to the general public the potential consequences of not applying these ideas.

During the semester you discuss: 1. What is a design manifesto and how do you write your own?

2. What is speculative design and how do we engage in it? Tutorials in weeks 7, 8, 9 and 10 will explore contexts and consequences of design according to each perspective demonstrated during the semester. Activities during these tutorials will directly help you structure and complete your manifesto.

While the exercises in each tutorial will not be graded individually, completing these activities will be crucial to developing your manifesto.

During weeks 11 and 12 we will run a design sprint to support the development of your speculative pieces of design. Therefore it is crucial to attend tutorials in these weeks to be able to complete the second part of your assessment.

A2 Deliverables Task 1: Design Manifesto Topic What should design be like in the future? Format You will submit your manifesto as text in a Word doc or PDF. Word Count 500-750 words Submission format: Blackboard Submission date Week 13 It is recommended that you finalise your Manifesto (Task 1) by Week 10 as it will help you with your Speculative Design piece, and it gives a chance for your tutors to give you formative feedback before the final submission date. Note that this is not mandatory, just highly recommended.

Task 2: Speculative Design Piece Topic You will choose a topic (the topic will be explained in week 11 tutorials) and design a speculative design proposal that makes people think about the topics and the consequences of your design. The ideas in your manifesto should underpin the development of your speculative piece. Format You will submit a design proposal explaining your idea. These will include detailed descriptions, sketches of the final piece, how it looks like and works, and what you expect the impacts will be. You should also include a reflection on how your speculative piece links with and expresses the ideas in your Manifesto. Word Count 750-1000 words Submission format Blackboard Submission date Week 13 Guided sprint work Weeks 11 and 12. (These 2 tutorials will step you through the process of design we want you to follow to create your speculative design proposal for your assessment.)
