Design Brief

Start with the following qualifying statement – “The proposed single dwelling development is located within the Monash City Council Subdivision - SD27375 –
Lot No. ??”. It is designed as per the planning provisions stipulated in the Monash City Council Guidelines. Indicate “quick facts” and key descriptors of the land and the designed home such as - the area of the block, location of the services provision, area of the ground floor, area of the upper floor, easement, orientation (insert a small cut out of your block and access roads as a locality map). Give general description of the structure (ex. Brick veneered timber framed construction with tiled roof supported by timber trusses…etc.)

Passive Design Features

Diagrammatic illustration of the passive design features of the “sustainable home” and how optimum orientation was achieved on your plot. Provide labels/short notes with arrows showcasing your design skills. The follow-up discussion should have - reference to challenges you have faced, especially you must be clear on what could not have been achieved - written in reflective manner. Indicate North, winter and summer wind directions clearly. Use of landscaping, interior layout, positioning of thermal masses, cross ventilation, discussed within the context of the application of passive design principles to your work.

Achieving planning regulations

You need to demonstrate your acquired knowledge in the interpretation and application of Monash planning guidelines in you design. The best way to illustrate this is to prepare a table indicating, relevant rule reference (A2, A3, A4, A8, A10, A11, A13, A20 etc,), minimum requirement (s) and what has been provided by you. For example, “rear set back” - indicate reference, what is the guideline says and what have you provided in satisfying the criteria.

Embodied Energy & Operational Energy assessment

Define what embodied energy is. Discuss how you propose to minimise embodied energy of your design (use the provided sample house embodied energy graph to identify elements which are having higher percentage of energy). Discuss qualitatively how your design targets such areas the areas in reducing the embodied energy of your home. You do not have to quantify this aspect.

Discuss, qualitatively, energy conservation considerations and the use of green energy aspects you would adopt. Proposing a list of home electrical appliance with their energy ratings is relevant

Potable water conservation / recycling features

Estimation of the total potable water demand of your house hold (consider 4 occupants) with the breakdown of usage without conservation. Demonstrate conceptually the strategies how your “Sustainable Home” design intends to conserve potable water. Estimate annual rain water which can be collected if you capture water from average rainfall on the roof. Demonstrate the percentage conservation of potable water through this mechanism. Estimate possible savings from recycling gray-water. Discuss and illustrate, through a conceptual diagram as to how these three pipe systems can be integrated.
