3ED003: Valuing Self and Others

Assignment Guidance

What do I need to do?

You will submit a poster or PowerPoint presentation that you will upload to Canvas. The poster/presentation should be 1500 words (+/- 10%) (between 1350 and 1650 words) and must contain evidence for each of the module Learning Outcomes (LO) which are:

LO1 Identify ethical issues in their subject.

LO2 Utilise communication skills to share their ideas.

LO3 Discuss principles of equality and diversity in their subject.

Please note that in order to pass this assessment you must have evidence for all 3 of these Learning Outcomes.

How do I produce this work?

There are two options, so either choose Option A or Option B.

You are required to produce an electronic poster, which can be created using a programme such as PowerPoint, Word or Publisher. Further guidance about how to do this will be given during your 3ED002: Preparing for Undergraduate Study, sessions.

Is there a template I could use to format the poster?

Yes, you can use the template below:

Where I began Where I am now Where I want to go next

My Personal Values

(Personal Development)

See note 1 below See note 2 below See note 3 below

My Professional Values

(Professional Development)

See note 4 below See note 5 below See note 6 below

My Reference List

Where did you begin in terms of your personal values and sense of self? Think back to you at the start of this module: describe who you were in terms of your identity, levels of self-confidence, how you viewed others and perhaps the world. There are other topics you could discuss here (motivation, communication skills, awareness of equity and diversity, amongst other things) but basically you need to describe who you were, way back in September.

Where are you now in terms of your personal values? How has this module changed you? What have you learnt? How have these changes occurred: through reading, through class discussion perhaps? Reflect on how you have changed and what has made you re-think who you are and what you stand for.

Where are you going next? What do you need to work on in the future? How will you do this? Basically, what are the gaps in your personal development and how will you address these?

Where did you begin in terms of your professional values? Back in September what professional values did you have? Did you know which career you wanted to pursue; did you have any experience of working in this sector? What did you think a professional person was like? How did this person show their professionalism?

Where are you now in terms of your professional values? What have you learnt about your professional self? What changes have you seen in yourself and how can these changes be explained? Can you relate where you are now in terms of professional standards?

Where are you going next? In terms of your professional development what would you like to do next? How will you work on these developmental areas? Why is it important that you continue to think about your future learning and development? What is an ethical and reflective practitioner and why is this of importance? You may want to start thinking about your future career aspirations in this section.

Reference List: your discussion, in sections 1 through to 6, needs to be supported by reading. The place to start your reading is the Module Reading List and then you may want to do some independent reading too. The way you demonstrate that you have engaged with reading is to reference in the body of your work and to provide a Reference List. Everything that you have referenced in your poster should be presented in the Reference List. In your 3ED002 sessions you will be shown how to reference accurately using the Harvard system. Please use this information to format your Reference List.

You can either present your whole poster on one page, or you can you can present 2 posters on separate pages, one with information for boxes 1-3 and one for boxes 4-6. This will allow you to add images to your poster, again you will be shown how to do this in module 3ED002. Higher marks will be awarded if you support your written work with carefully considered images/diagrams. The important point to remember is, that whether your poster is presented on one or two pages, it needs to be within the word limit of 1500 (+/- 10%) words. You can choose how many words to use on each poster.

What should I do once the work is complete?

You will need to upload your electronic poster or PowerPoint presentation to Canvas. Again, guidance will be given about how to upload nearer to the due date.

What happens once I have uploaded my poster/presentation?

Once you have submitted your poster it will be marked by a member of the delivery team. A percentage of posters will be second marked during moderation. The External Examiner may also view a sample of the cohort's work. Grades are provisional until they have been presented at a Module Exams Board. Students will be notified of their grade via Canvas in a timely manner (usually within a 4-week time frame). The exact date for grade and feedback release will be available via Canvas.

How does the grading system work?

In order to pass this assessment, you need to get a mark of 40% or above.

What happens if I get a grade below 40%?

You will normally be given one additional attempt; this is called a re-submission. The tutor who marks your poster/presentation will provide feedback and feedforward to help you work towards turning your original submission into a passed piece of work. They will also offer tutorial support. Please do not doubt your ability if you do not pass the assessment on your first attempt. Academic study is not easy and it is quite normal to need to revise work, especially in semester 1.

I have read this guidance but still have unanswered questions what should I do?

Please ask! All tutors are there to assist, we want you to get the grade you aspire to; so if you are unsure just ask: you could do this in class, via the Discussion Forum on Canvas or by emailing your tutor directly.

Good luck everyone!
