Introduction:
In part B of the Applied Project, you will continue your investigation in Part A with your group members.
The Microsoft Excel file named SFB Applied Project Part B 2023.3.xlsx is to be used for this project. It can be downloaded from vUWS.
You must also refer to the marking guide when answering the questions.
Data set:
You will use the data collected in Part A from all your group members as your data set.
Copy the data from all your group members into Table 1 in the worksheet named Data Set Part B in the Excel file SFB Applied Project Part B 2023.3.xlsx prior to commencing your work.
You must use this as your sample data to answer all the questions.
Question 1(10 marks)Marks
In this question you are to investigate the difference in information retention between handwriting and typing by performing a numerical and graphical analysis using the calculated Difference (%)'.
Refer to the worksheet named Question 1 in the Excel file SFB Applied Project Part B 2023.3.xlsx
All Excel work for this question must be done in this worksheet.
Copy the data in Table 1 Difference (%) column into Table 2*.[1]
Using Excel obtain the Descriptive Statistics summary output for the Difference (%).*[1]
Using Excel, construct a histogram showing the distribution of Difference (%) with 8 classes*.[3]
Briefly comment on the shape of the distribution of the histogram you obtained above by referring to its skewness.[1]
Do the numerical results you obtained in part b) agree with the shape you described in part d)? Justify your answer. (No justification, no marks)[1]
Discuss the difference in retention between handwriting and typing by referring to the shape of your histogram and numerical measures.[1]
Using an appropriate Excel output, construct a 90% confidence interval for the population mean difference in retention percentage*.[2]
* Evidence of work in Excel is required
Question 2(10 marks)Marks
In this question you are to explore the difference in the information retention between handwriting and typing by estimating the difference in population means using your sample data. To do this you will construct a 95% confidence interval for the difference between the mean retention percentage by handwriting and the mean retention percentage by typing.
Assume that the variances of the two populations are equal and the two samples are independent.
Refer to the worksheet named Question 2 in the Excel file SFB Applied Project Part B 2023.3.xlsx
All Excel work for this question must be done in this worksheet.
Copy the data from the corresponding columns in Table 1 into Table 3*.[1]
Using Excel obtain the measures in the table below for the two groups: handwriting and typing and complete the table.
You must use appropriate Excel functions to obtain the values*.[3]
Handwriting Typing
Sample size Sample mean Sample standard deviation Calculate the standard error using the appropriate formula from the formula booklet. (You may use the calculator or Excel).[2]
What is the degrees of freedom?[1]
What is the critical value?[1]
Hence construct the confidence interval.[1]
Interpret your confidence interval.[1]
* Evidence of work in Excel is required
Question 3(10 marks)Marks
In this question, you are to investigate if the retention percentage is higher when handwriting than when typing by conducting a hypothesis test. To do this you will carry out a paired t-test at a 5% significant level to determine if the retention percentage when handwriting is significantly greater than when typing.
Refer to the worksheet named Question 3 in the Excel file SFB Applied Project Part B 2023.3.xlsx
All Excel work for this question must be done in this worksheet.
Copy the data from the corresponding columns in Table 1 into Table 4*.[1]
State the null and alternative hypotheses.[1]
Using Excel obtain the correct output*.[3]
Clearly indicate the p-value, critical value, observed value (test statistic) and the rejection zone in the diagram below.[2]
What is the decision about your hypothesis statement, at a significance level of 5%? Clearly justify your answer using appropriate numerical values.[2]
What do you conclude about the difference in retention between handwriting and typing? [1][1]
* Evidence of work in Excel is required
Question 4(10 marks)Marks
In this question you are to examine if the there is a correlation between the total number of characters and the difference in the retention rate.
Refer to the worksheet named Question 4 in the Excel file SFB Applied Project Part B 2023.3.xlsx
All Excel work for this question must be done in this worksheet
Copy the data from the corresponding columns in Table 1 into Table 5*.[1]
State the independent and dependent variables in the context of the question.[1]
Using Excel, obtain a linear regression output. *[2]
Using Excel, construct the scatter plot and insert the regression line. You must clearly label the axes and name it with a suitable title.*[2]
Using the outputs you obtained or otherwise, state the correlation coefficient correct to 2 significant figures*.[1]
coefficient of correlation r =
Discuss how the difference in retention rate is affected by the total number of characters. You must support your discussion with appropriate measures from above outputs.[2]
Is this model suitable to predict the difference in retention rate? Explain why.[1]
* Evidence of work in Excel is required
