ASSIGNMENT DETAILS

Is there a template for this assignment?

Yes, a template has been provided for you to download and use. Using the provided template will ensure you include all the crucial parts of this assignment. You can download the template from the A4 details in Canvas or from the 42 padlet.

What counts towards the 1200 word count?

Each template will be 400 words. The two sections that count towards this include the activity explanation (200 words) and the justification (200 words). The theme, resource, age group/year level and curriculum link are not included in the word count; neither is your reference list. Please note that in-text citations within the activity explanation and the justification sections are included within your word count.

How do you suggest we allocate the 1200 words (word count) to ensure that we address each part of the assignment to the recommended depth?

Great question! 1200 words (+/- 10%) is the total word count for this assignment. The assignment details and template suggest you break it down like this:

Is there any way I can check my work before I submit?

Yes! There are a few ways you can check your work before submission.

The Week 9, 10 and 11 activities allow you to develop your understanding for each theme of the assignment.

The originality report submission point is the best way to check your referencing is accurate. This will help you avoid any possible plagiarism concerns.

Its a good idea to also submit your work to the services of Studiosity to help you further improve your writing and proofreading in the assignment.

Use the Marking Criteria in the Assignment Details to cross check your own work before you submit.

Activities

What are the most important things to consider when selecting my activities?

You will be demonstrating your understanding of contemporary pedagogy. You need to select the best possible activities you can that address the themes in each template and are appropriate for the curriculum links chosen. Think about contemporary pedagogy. Try to avoid disengaging resources such as worksheets.

Aim for a variety of activities and teaching strategies across all three templates. This will help show a stronger understanding.

Do I need to create the ideas from scratch or can I use ideas I find on the internet?

Either is fine. Just be mindful to adapt the ideas to meet the needs of this assignment. Be wary of sites aimed at parents or American sources. Doing a quick search is a great way to gain some lovely ideas, but you then need to describe these ideas for use in an Australian educational setting, to meet the needs of the template.

Using resources presented in Scootle is a great idea, however, be mindful that just because they are in Scootle does not automatically make them the best possible resource to use in this assignment. You also need to explain any resource in your own creative way to address original ideas in the marking criteria, rather than copying an entire lesson idea from somewhere else.

Justification

Do I need to include evidence (academic literature) in each template?

In the Justification section of each template, you need to use academic literature and curricula documentation to support your statements. If academic underpinning is not evident, you cannot pass Criteria 2 of this assignment. Make sure you show your engagement with the unit learning materials, in particular the weekly readings. Next, complete further relevant, academic quality research.

Curriculum

Which curriculum document do I use in my folio?

In Assignment 4, you will use either the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF)or the Australian Curriculum (AC) you wont use both. If your activity is aimed at preschool children you will use the EYLF. If your activity is aimed at Foundation - Year 6 you will use the AC.

The EYLF: The EYLF outcomes are very broad, which means that it is more difficult to match your selected resource to a specific outcome. Instead, look closer at Outcome 4 and 5 and select the best suited general outcome. For your Curriculum Link, select 1 or 2 (max) key components from within one of the 5 Learning Outcomes.

The AC: In primary school, a more formal and structured set of specific curriculum content descriptors is used. For your Curriculum Link, select ONE specific content descriptor from Foundation - Year 6 to match each of your 3 resources.

Watch the introduction to the Curriculum VIDEO in the PADLET to see how to navigate and use the Australian Curriculum and the EYLF.

Can I ask why we use the Australian Curriculum when we in Victoria use the Victorian Curriculum?

Good question! We have students studying all over Australia with us so we use the AC to ensure we are inclusive of all states. So this is why when we explain the curriculum we tend to focus on the national one - Australian Curriculum in primary schools or the Early Years Learning Framework in early childhood. You will notice that the following information appears in each of your assignments:

So you can choose whether you want to use the national curriculum framework or your relevant state one. In Module 0.4 there is further information about the relevant state and/or territory curriculums for primary school.

Themes

Academic Writing & Referencing

How do I write the content of my assignment?

Ensure that the content of your reflection is written in a simple, easy to read to font, eg. Times New Roman size 12 or Calibri size 11.

What does academic style writing mean?

It means to write really clearly and concisely. Be careful that your writing is not too wordy, waffly or unnecessarily complicated. Academic writing is often quite simple, clear and concise. It draws on research literature (this means in-text citations) and is quite formal.

What does third person voice mean?

This means, avoid using personal pronouns such as I and my. Throughout this assignment, you should write in third person voice, so you will not refer to yourself or give your own opinion. Instead, remain objective and focus on the content.

How many references do I need?

As with A3, there is no magic number of how many citations you need to include in your templates. Aim to justify the main/strongest elements of your activity and back everything up with literature. The QUALITY and VARIETY of your sources is something we look at. Also, how well you use the research.

Do I need to reference images that I include in my folio?

As in A3, you will be including images in this assignment. You will include an image of your activity to help explain what it is. Please caption all images appropriately and reference all images that are not your own or free to use. See the details in the A4 PADLET of how to do this.

Do I include a reference list?

Yes. Your submission will need a reference list on the final page. If you use the template provided in the A2 details, it already has the reference list included within it. This list should include all the literature and images (if required) that you used throughout your folio. References should be ordered alphabetically. Remember, only sources that have been cited within your assignment should appear in your reference list.

Is it worth spending time editing and proofreading my work?

Absolutely! Make sure you are spending LOTS of time proofreading and editing. The quality of your writing does matter and can definitely help raise your marks. Read your work on the computer many, many times. Then, print your work off and use a pen to go through your sentences with a fine tooth comb! Reading it aloud can also help you to pick up on errors within sentences that might be easily overlooked on paper.

Do I need an appendix for material used in my template?

No, you dont need to provide any external resources in your submission but keep these if you have them as you can use these when you begin teaching!

If you are quoting or paraphrasing something from a text but the author has referenced that to another author, who do you reference? The original author, the author of the text that you are reading or both?

What you have described is known as citing a secondary source as you read the secondary author's ideas in the primary source. There is a specific way to do this. See below for some info:

Secondary Sources - using 'as cited in...'

Sometimes, an author may cite another author. In this case, you always need to cite where you actually read the information - even if the reading includes quotes or citations to other authors like in the Siemon reading. To do this, we use the phrase 'as cited in....'. Then, you only list where you read the information in the reference list.

EXAMPLE (ALL CITATIONS):

Mathematics can be defined as....... (Soanes et al., 2008 as cited in Siemon et al., 2015)

EXAMPLE (REFERENCE LIST):

Siemon, D. A., Beswick, K., Brady, K., Clark, J., and Faragher, R. (2015). Teaching mathematics: Foundations to middle years (2nd ed.). South Melbourne, VIC: Oxford University Press.

Submission

How do I submit?

You should upload one A4 document only to the Assignment 4 submission point in canvas. You should use the template provided in the A4 details and ensure you include a reference list on the final page.

You can upload a word document or a pdf version of your assignment to the A4 submission point. We strongly recommend exporting as a PDF even if you are using Word. It keeps the formatting clean and ensures the document uploads correctly (e.g. looks the same as when you created it).
