Introduction

These assignments allow you to consider material covered in class as well as from your own research  to demonstrate your understanding of system concepts. There are two components to the assignments:

1. Elements where you work in groups to do your research but produce and submit an individual assignment. This represents 20% of the assessments for the subject as indicated in the Subject  Outline.

2. Elements where you continue to work in your groups and submit a group assignment. This  represents 30% of the assessments for the subject as indicated in the Subject Outline.

We will form groups in Week 2 and you must remain in these groups right through the semester. You  should only form groups with students in the class to which you belong e.g. if you are in Wednesday  class form groups with students in the Wednesday class. Distance mode students will be allocated to  groups by the subject coordinator. Group sizes are to be between 4 - 6 students. For the standard mode  students, it is the student’s responsibility to find a group to join.

Topic

E-waste is becoming a significant problem to be addressed. The rapid transit of technology and its  falling prices mean that consumers are easily able to buy newer releases of electronic equipment such  as mobile phones, relegating the previous release to waste. This is compounded by the very strong  marketing that accompanies each such release. E-waste is quite different from general waste such as  organic waste in that we cannot just bury it in the ground and hope that it goes away.

You may find this recent news article in the Australian context informative as to the nature of the  problem.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-03-10/australian-e-waste-ending-up-in-toxic-african-dump/8339760

In your individual and group assignments, you will research the phenomenon of e-waste and, through  a systems perspective, discuss the origins of the problem and possible mitigation.

Individual Assignment Instructions

  • Research the phenomenon of e-waste.
  • Research the concept of 4 Levels of Thinking as discussed in the subject reference by Maani and  Cavana1.
  • Using your research, illustrate the origins and the growth of the problem by considering e-waste  issues in accordance with the concept of 4 Levels of Thinking. You need to indicate some factors  that contribute to the problem which relate to each of the levels of thinking. You may do this using  a diagram with brief explanations in support of your diagram.
  • For assignment length and submission procedure, refer to Subject Outline.

Group Assignment Instructions

  1. Develop a Causal Loop Diagram (CLD) providing high level view of the problem you have  identified through your research. Indicate the key factors that contribute to the problem of e-waste.
  2. Having the high-level view, pick one aspect and follow the Five Phases of System Dynamics to  carry out a solution. You need to use Vensim (www.vensim.com) for drawing CLDs, constructing  SFDs, and conducting dynamic modelling.
  3. While applying the System Dynamics methodology, you may use data that you have sourced from  publicly available sources, with due acknowledgement, or in the absence of such data, you may  make reasonable assumptions as to the data.
  4. You need to submit a 6-page paper in the IEEE Journal paper format. (Refer to the attachment  for the template).
  5. For submission procedure, refer to Subject Outline.
  6. The group assignment has additional submission criteria discussed below:
    • 1. All Vensim diagrams should be provided in landscape A4 format as well as embedded  within the paper.
    • All equations and data (real or assumed) should be provided at the end of your paper. This  is included in the required page count.
    • Turnitin submissions should not have any pictures. Vensim diagrams should not be  submitted as pictures.
