Resit Assessment 2 Case Study
Weighting: 70%
Due Date:Monday 20th June, 11.59 pm.
Word Limit: 3000 words
The Electoral Commission of [country/region] has decided to conduct a democratic audit in relation to the democratic culture, functions, structures and representative role of political parties and the extent to which these parties have challenged or advanced democratic principles.
You have been tasked to conduct a case study of [x] political party to inform the Commissions overall findings. The Commission has set out a clear structure in terms of the criteria although you may want to concentrate on particular areas and add additional sections that are especially relevant to your case study. You should also give adequate attention to the context (i.e. the electoral and party system and recent political developments) in which the chosen party operates. All criteria below must however be covered.
Introduction to the political party, its recent achievements, a discussion of the party political context in which it operates and how these have facilitated or constrained its capacity to contribute to the development of democratic politics in its unique setting.
To what extent does the partys ideology align with the theoretical concepts of liberal democracy, or indeed, other conceptions of democracy that it seeks to advance?
Do the partys governance structures ensure democratic principles are met (issues of candidate selection, corruption, inclusiveness, openness etc.)?
How has the partys membership developed over the past 10 years and what are the main considerations for democracy (declining membership, representative membership, inclusive, etc.)?
To what extent does the partys leadership adhere to principles of democracy and/or contribute to a democratic crisis?
How effectively does the party exercise its role of representation both in terms of its own unique electorate and the wider public interest?
Has the party actively sought to promote democratic principles in new and innovative ways?
You should finish your case study report with a clear set of recommendations of how the party could improve its democratic culture, functions and structures. (250 words min.)
Submission is via Turnitin only at the link T3 Resit Case Study Submission on the same section you received this guidance from.
