ASSESSMENT TASKS TC " ASSESSMENT "

ICTNWK429 Install hardware to networks

Assessment 1 - Knowledge Assessment (Written Tasks)

1.1 While Dave was planning what hardware needed to be ordered for ABC Inc, he found that some products were far cheaper than others on the market. Upon further investigation he found they used older protocols or standards that were either obsolete or advised against.

Briefly explain what the following are and some of the protocols that are used in each:

Wireless access points

Voice networking

Data networking

1.2 Janice met with her client to discuss publishing a tender to hire a contractor for changes to the infrastructure. After explaining the requirement and its importance, the client took some time to review the proposal and originally asked if there were any other options worth exploring.

After reviewing the case, the client eventually accepted the proposal and gave Janice the go-ahead to publish the tender notice.

What steps does Janice need to take to take for the tender process from start to finish?

1.3 Edward reached the phase where the new hardware he installed for XYZ International needs to be tested.

Before beginning work the next day he decided to do some homework and plan on what diagnostic tools are available for him to use in carrying out these tests. The hardware he installed are a few computers, a server, 2 routers, and a switch.

What is the purpose of diagnostic software? Would he find anything he could use? If yes, what and how would it help?

1.4 Thomas is required to install some hardware which also requires a software installation. Being as its the first time hes done such a setup, what is the difference between the hardware installation and the software installation?

What steps are taken in general while doing both?

1.5 Charley was assigned the task of installing the hardware for an entire branch network and connecting it to the enterprise wide area network (WAN).

Originally, he was confused as to the difference, would this branch network also be considered as a WAN? Why or why not? If not, then what network type is it?

Also, how would devices in the branch network be differentiated from devices on the rest of the enterprise network?

After discussing the topic with a colleague, Charley is left confused as to how switches and routers would route data packets between two remote networks. What would you tell him to explain?

1.6 While deciding on what type of cables to use to connect various devices, Samantha decides she should look over the basic details again and compare them to her requirements.

What information will she need to consider? What are the various specifications of the different types of cables used in networking today?

1.7 Jerry is required to set up 50 new computers for a new department. During briefing he was told that additional software installation and configuration would be handled by another member of the ICT department. Jerrys responsibility is simply to have the devices up and running.

Before beginning the work, Jerry was handed over a bootable USB drive with the setup for Windows 10 Enterprise. Before getting to work Jerry spoke to his manager to confirm his responsibilities.

Connect the hardware and install the OS.

What steps does Jerry need to take in order to install the OS such that each machine is ready according to the specifications?

1.8 After completing his task, Jerry moves on to his next job responsibility which was to install a router for the same department. Will this be any different from setting up the computers?

What steps will he need to take to set-up the device and configure it.

1.9 While choosing hardware that is compatible with the current enterprise network, Jessica came across a list of software packages in the network documentation. After looking over the information she realised she had to discard the list she was working on and start all over.

What is a software package and why would it affect the list of hardware Jessica was working on? Provide an example of a software package.

Assessment 2 - Performance Assessment (Skills)

Requirements

Read the case study carefully then answer the questions following. You may assume any information that has not been mentioned in the case study, however any assumptions you make must be clearly identified as assumptions.

Case Study:

Youve been hired by TomorrowToday Industries, a robotics firm working on the latest technologies. After gaining new investors theyve decided to begin developing their own software rather than collaborate with other companies and risk losing valuable intellectual property.

For that purpose, theyve recently constructed a new building and are currently working on expanding their computer network. This is where you come in.

After orientation youre provided the office location of and told to meet the head of the ICT department, Charlotte. She introduces you to Wilbur who is currently in charge of the project of expanding the computer network, meaning hes your go-to guy for any information related to the project. He explains that your tasks will be to connect all of the new hardware which ranges from routers, to switches, to the workstations.

All of the servers will remain in the main building, additional servers are being worked on and installed by other ICT members as you speak. He explains that latency is their biggest enemy, for that reason the two buildings will be connected using optical fibre cables, which have already been laid down, to get as high bandwidth as possible.

He says theyve already planned out most of the network, the only thing is youll have to figure out what hardware theyll need to use in terms of the networking devices, workstation hardware has already been chosen and will be ordered with your name given as the one who will review and sign for the delivery.

Wilbur provides a copy of the network diagram and a list with device details for each device on the diagram including IP addresses, and speed requirements.

He lets you know where his office is and that you can talk to him at any time.

With the information in your hand you go to your office and get to work.

2.1 How will you choose what devices need to be installed? What will you need to do when the shipment of computers arrives?

2.2 When all the equipment has arrived and you were just about to get started on the installation process, Charlotte calls a meeting with you, Wilbur, and some of the other members of the ICT department.

She explains that the dead-line for the project has been moved to an earlier date and they need things to be sped up. The servers in the main building have been installed and are being configured, the process is expected to be done shortly.

Your work is just about to begin.

Suppose there are 3 routers that need to be installed, 4 switches, and 40 computers.

Each router will take approximately 1 work day to install the rack, router, and configure it.

Each switch will take exactly half a work-day, and you can install 5 computers per work day meaning simply connect the hardware and install the OS.

For the computers to be completely setup the other ICT employee will require network connectivity and the total process will take them half a day per computer.

Based on the information above, what would be the most efficient way for you to work so that the entire project can be completed as quickly as possible?

How long would it take for you to complete your work, and would there be any difference in the time it took for you to complete your work and the other employee to set up all of the computers?

Remember, you can make assumptions.

Hint: The network diagram is symmetrical.

Briefly explain the steps that you will need to take to install each device.

Explain some of the techniques could be used to provide instructions to clients and/or users after completing the installation?

Explain how you obtain client evaluation and feedback to ensure that client requirements have been met?

Assessment 3 Team Presentation

Introduction

Presentation is the process of showing and explaining the content of a topic to an audience. It is often used to assess student learning in individual or group research projects.

Presentation assessment consists of a topic for the student to research, discuss and present, followed by a question and answer session between a tutor and the presenter(s). This measures the ability of students to respond, think under pressure and manage discussion. It is in this part of the presentation that the student shows his/her in-depth knowledge of the topic and presentation skills.

A good presentation is generally expected to consist of:

Introduction/ Aims/Objectives

Major points and ideas explained and summarised

Results/Related points/Issues/or others depending on the topic

Conclusion future work

The presentation should be presented in the time allowed

Presentation Requirements:

Develop a class presentation of no more than 15 minutes to demonstrate your understanding of the challenges of installing, configuring and verifying hardware for a small network.

Be prepared to answer questions from your trainer and your fellow class members following the presentation.
