DescriptionA citation/reference of a source of information followed by a summary or analysis of the source, which for this assessment will be two academic journal articles. This assessment allows students to practice and gain preparatory competence in academic research, referencing and writing skills. Skills for this assessment will be modelled, coached, and explored in tutorials.

Weighting15%

Length400 words (+/- 10%) including words already on the answer template (53). Students should add no more than 387 of their own words in order for total word count to not exceed 440 words. Do not change, edit or remove any words on the template.

Course Learning Outcomes assessed

Ability in academic research, referencing and essay writing skills.

Ability to locate, organise and analyse legal information from a variety of sources including legislation and cases.

Font, Size and SpacingThe template is Arial font, size 12, with double spacing, this should be retained.

ExtensionsAs Assessment 1 is worth 15%, students are required to email the Course Coordinator, susie.wright@newcastle.edu.au directly to apply for an extension. Applications must include valid grounds, evidence as required and also the number of days extension requested. Students are required to read the Adverse Circumstances information before applying for an extension.

Feedback ProvidedOnline feedback will be available in Grades within 15 working days of submission. An email will be sent to students to notify them when Assessment 1 has been given feedback and marked.

This article is authored by Donald E. Klingner, a Distinguished Professor at the University of Colorado.

The author argues that Donald Trumps actions and statements have raised concerns about the respect for democratic norms and institutions, which are essential for upholding The Rule of Law.

Trump demonstrates a lack of adherence to the law by disregarding fundamental democratic principles

which are crucial for a just and inclusive society where everyone has a voice and equal opportunities.

It is important for leaders to always be committed in following the law. To have a healthy democracy there needs to be accountability.

Evidence used is expert opinion.

The author uses background evidence collected from the mainstream media and information from news articles.

This article provides the use of news articles that may make the evidence less relevant and credible due to the lack of supporting primary sources and potential bias in research.
