Audio Visual Role Play: Family-Centred Care

Nurse: Mrs. Daniels, I hope you are well today, please dont be mad at me. My name is [Name], and I will be the nurse assigned to care for your husband James in the Intensive Care Unit. Ayo, whats going on buddy? Or how are you feeling?

Mrs. Daniels: [Irritated] Oh no, Im so worried now. They said that he took a turn for the worse, and now he is in the intensive care unit. What has happened or is happening to him?

Nurse: This I know is a very stressed-up moment for you. Allow me to describe the previous events that were the case and the present actions being taken to assist James. He described that when he was in the emergency department, he began to worsen, being septic, meaning this infection had affected his body badly. He was sweating and his pulse was increased, while his blood pressure was low.

Mrs. Daniels: Sepsis? And will he be alright?

Nurse: Of course; we are doing all we can to contain his condition. Currently, he is managed with intravenous fluids and medications to maintain adequate blood pressure as well as treat the infection. He is also being supervised very closely, especially in terms of his cardiac and blood pressure checks. The ICUs chief initiative is to offer the best treatment that the medical facility can offer.

Mrs. Daniels: Supporting the strategy: What can I do to help? I feel so helpless.

Nurse: The physical support like your company and the morale boost that comes with it is still very much needed. Lydia sometimes feels that she can do nothing for James, but just staying with him and hugging him is not a small thing. If you have any questions or perhaps, you need help yourself, then do not hesitate to ask. Both of you are not alone here.

Mrs. Daniels: They all voiced that, I want to know more about what is going on. What do you understand bout sepsis and how is it managed?

Nurse: Of course. Sepsis is defined as severe inflammation of the body triggered by an infection. It can cause injury to the tissue, and dysfunction of organs and can be sometimes fatal if not addressed earliest. To help James recover from infection we are giving him antibiotics, and for his blood pressure, we are giving him fluids, and other supporting therapies so that his organs work well. It is quite a dangerous disease; however, if appropriate treatment is taken, most of the patients regain their health.

Mrs. Daniels: What can I look forward to in the next few days?

Nurse: The situation will unfold over the next few days most certainly. James will stay more in the ICU to check him frequently. We shall expect to see signs of progress in him; for instance, lesser rates of his heart, a reduced degree of temperature, and steady blood pressure. One should step by step. We will make sure to keep you informed on how he is doing more often.

Mrs. Daniels: Thank you. Its just so overwhelming.

Nurse: I understand. This one is rather overwhelming. Do not forget, of course, about yourself also. The situation requires you to be strong for James and the children; this means you have to endure and be strong of heart. You are free to speak or perhaps you want a breathing space just inform us. If this would be beneficial to you, we can facilitate for you to talk with our social worker or chaplain.

Mrs. Daniels: I may require that. I appreciate your kindness Your welcome.

Nurse: Youre welcome, Mrs. Daniels. Gay couples are also welcome here. We should not give up and concentrate on what we are doing to assist James get well. Do you need any help, anything at all justsaytheword.
