Task

Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have been shown to process social information differently than typically developing (TD) children. One paper that demonstrates these differences in social attention was by Riby and Hancock (2009), who revealed that children with ASD spent less time looking at faces that were embedded in images than TD children. They also revealed that children with Williams Syndrome (WS) looked at the embedded faces for longer than TD children, which supports the different, approach-based social behaviours observed in children with WS. Later work extended these ideas to suggest that the biases in viewing behaviour of children with WS may be different depending on the emotions that the faces displayed.

Participants were 120 children (40 with ASD, 40 with WS and 40 TD) recruited to take part in this study. Each child was shown 40 photographs which were on the screen for 5 seconds, while their eye movements were recorded. There were 2 types of faces that were shown. On half of the trials, the embedded faces showed an angry expression. On the other half, the embedded faces showed a happy expression. The measure of interest was the time that the children first fixated (i.e., looked at) the person shown in the image (in milliseconds). This measure captures how rapidly the child detected the person.

The dataset includes one column which represents the IV (Independent Variable), and two that represent the two DVs (Dependent Variable - Happy and Angry emotions). There is also a column with the age of the participants. You will be required to identify and label the IV and DV appropriately.

Discussion:

1). In the first paragraph of your discussion, you should restate your research aims. You should then briefly summarise the results of this study. Note you should not include numerical values in your discussion.

2). The subsequent paragraphs should unpack the results. Were the findings in line with what we expected based on previous literature? Were any findings different? If there are any findings that are different, explain why this may have occurred.

3). What are the practical implications of these results? Does it change the way that we think about social attention in children with ASD and WS? How could these findings inform the clinical field?
