Purpose:

To assist students to the effective application of technology based information systems in
organizations, as tools for achieving operational efficiency and the creation of business value. The
creation of the e-Commerce Portfolio will help students develop understanding of how information
systems support development and management of products and services and the decision making
process to achieve competitive advantage.

Task and requirements:

Students must work in teams. Group activities are a strategic element of the BIS 3003
course where students are challenged to work with people possessing different personalities and
skills. Students are required to work collegially, effectively and with respect. Group members
should endeavor to work on all aspects of the assignment under the direct supervision of the
faculty.

Part A: Written Report – Worth 100 marks (15% of the total grade)

Consider the following topic areas and questions as you work on your e-Commerce
Portfolio.

Introduction (5%)

Stage 1. e-Commerce Website Development (35 %):

Based on the Mock-up diagrams created in your previous project, create your e-
commerce website using one off the free web hosting services (preferably www.wix.com). You

do not need to buy a URL link. Examples of these free web hosting services are:

  • Wix.com www.wix.com
  • Weebly – Ideal for basic websites. www.weebly.com
  • Gator by HostGator
  • Beaver Builder
  • Magento – Suitable for larger ecommerce stores.
  • Squarespace – Suitable for new ecommerce stores.
  • SITE123 – Ideal for portfolio websites
  • Shopify – Suitable for larger (20,000+ products) ecommerce stores.
  • BigCommerce – Suitable for mid-range ecommerce stores.
  • Pixpa – Ideal for portfolio websites.

Your e-commerce website must include at least 5 main pages with appropriate information
and graphics (pictures, video, maps, forms etc.)

a. Home page (10 marks)

  1. Appropriate and professional content

b. About Us page (5 marks)

  1. Introduction of Company’s Management and Employment page
  2. Mission, Vision, Strategy
  3. Owners of the company (group members)

c. Products / Services (5 marks)

  1. Product or service information page
  2. Product or service order form page

d. Contact Page (5 marks)

  1. All contact information
  2. Maps
  3. Forms

e. Any one of the following (5 marks)

  1. FAQ (frequently asked question) page using the FAQ template
  2. Product returns policy or service quality guarantee policy page
  3. Customer feedback page
  4. Link to other company’s site as an extra service to customers 
  5. Other relevant pages for you web site (e.g., security policy, order
    tracking page by a delivery company such as Aramex)

f. Graphics (5 marks)

  1. Appropriate use of forms, pictures, graphics, videos, maps, texts

Stage 2. Use of data analysis for business decision-making (40 %):

  1. Website statistical analysis (25 marks)
    At the end of each week (weeks 10, 11, 12, 13, 14), each group has to download the
    analysis report, analyze the graphs and take decision to implement in the next week
    in order to increase the ecommerce traffic, the sales and customer behaviors. (Example of Wix analytics: https://support.wix.com/en/article/wix-analytics-traffic-sales-and-behavior-overviews)
  2. Survey analysis (15 marks)
  1. By the end of week 11, each group has to create a questionnaire (maximum 10
    questions) in order to collect data about the attractiveness of the e-commerce
    website, the design, the responsivity, the content, the checkout...
  2. Each group has to analyze the survey data and use the analysis to make their e-commerce website more effective.

Stage 3. Analyze ethics and information systems security (15 %):

Based on the analysis of security measure provided by the web-hosting platform you
have used (Weebly, Wix, Magento, Shopify...), discuss the advantages and
disadvantages for your e-commerce website.

Conclusion (challenges and lessons learned) (5 %)

Part B: Oral Presentation (Individual) – Worth 100 marks (15% of the total grade)

An oral presentation will be scheduled for week 15, allowing the student to further explain and defend their e-commerce Portfolio.

  • Faculty teaching the course can assess his/her own students.
  • Each student will be assessed by two faculty (for purposes of standardization of the assessment
    results across the colleges).
  • Markers can share grades with each other.
  • Video/voice recording of the oral presentation is a good practice that can be taken into
    consideration. It helps moderation, or addressing any potential issues later.
  • PowerPoint/Prezi can be a used as visual aid during the presentation.
  • Submission of the Portfolio report prior to the scheduled presentation is mandatory.
