Coursework Assignment:

This assignment is a group project (3 students per group) that will allow the students
to demonstrate their ability to work on practical assignments and creating structured
report.

The entire assignment contributes 15% towards the overall assessment of this course,
which totals up to 15 marks

Intended Learning Outcomes assessed:

As a result of participating in this assessment, students will be assessed on the
following outcomes:

Understanding of Capital Structure analysis.

Understanding Business Valuation methods

Understanding company Cost of Capital

Able to critically evaluate and create reports and structured essays

Assignment Topic:

Report on a chosen company

Instructions:

1- Company selection:

Choose a publicly traded company of your choice (local or international
companies). Ensure that the company has sufficient financial data available
for analysis. You can select a company from any industry.

Avoid choosing a bank, insurance company or any financial service company.

Download financial statement of the chosen company (e.g. from MSM
website for last three years).

The students must inform the selected company to the respective lecturer
within 2 days of announcement. Topics will be considered on first come first
basis in order to avoid repetition.

2- Length, Format and submission details:

Prepare a comprehensive report summarizing your findings and analysis.
The assignment should be typed, well structured and submitted in a PDF or
Word document format.

The report should be minimum 1,500 words and should not exceed 4,000
words in total. The essay needs to be typed in times roman font size 12 with
double or 1.5 line spacing.

Use tables, graphs, and charts to present the financial analysis in a clear and organized manner.
- Ensure that all calculations are clearly presented and labeled.

Ensure that you provide appropriate references for any external sources used
in the assignment.

The coursework assignment must be submitted on or before 14th May 2024 at
2:00pm.

Submissions will be made in soft copy on e learning. Submissions made after
the deadline will not be accepted.

A turnitin report showing a maximum limit of 10% must be attached.
The assignment will be submitted with:

A cover page providing the details of the student and section
A content page (e.g table of content)

The report consisting of Introduction, Discussion and Conclusion

3- Assessment Criteria:

The report should be purely based on the students understanding of the given
technique and the knowledge acquired during the course.

Credit will be given to originality and creativity Of writing the report.

Marking will take into account the following criteria:

Choice, Clarity and Quality of discussion 25%

Accuracy and completeness of calculations: 30%

Depth of analysis and understanding of concepts: 30%

Overall structure and organization of the report: 15%

Assessment Details

Obtain the financial statements (balance sheet and income statement) of the
selected company for the past THREE years.

 

1) Cost of Capital Estimation:

a) Determine the company's cost of debt by analyzing its interest expense and
outstanding debt.
b) Calculate the company's cost of equity using any other appropriate method.
c) Estimate the company's weighted average cost of capital (WACC) by
considering the proportion of debt and equity in its capital structure.
d) Discuss the significance of the cost of capital in investment decision making
and the company's overall financial health.

2) Business Valuation:

a) Select THREE valuation methods (e.g., Assets based valuation, Earnings
based valuation etc.) to estimate the market value of the company share.
b) Compare and assess the three valuation methods calculated in (a).
c) Estimate the market value of the company debt (assume that the debt will be
redeemable in 5 years at a premium of 10%).
d) Discuss the factors that may influence the company’s valuation and potential
limitations of the chosen valuation method.
