Older Person and Healthy Ageing Module
Assignment title
Nurses have frontline experience to the most detrimental effects of vulnerability on the fate of particular individuals, groups and populations (Tomm-Bonde, L. 2012)
Considering this statement, critically discuss the role that you can play in mitigating the effects of potential vulnerability of older people in your clinical practice. Please support your assignment by referring to relevant evidence.
Word limit: 2000 words.
Context for assignment
Informed by principles and indicators of positive ageing (National Positive Ageing Strategy 2013 and Department of Health, Positive Ageing Indicators 2018 & 2019, respectively) I am asking you to explore potential sources of vulnerability that older people may face. For this assignment I would like you to focus on clinical practice recognising potential sources of vulnerability that older people in their care may face. In that context I would be interested to see you refer to potential sources of vulnerability that will be discussed in this module such as social isolation, loneliness, ageism, P.J paralysis, failure to sufficiently recognise the importance of valuing patients time and their voice, dignity, person centredness, dementia, frailty as well as the impact of Covid-19. I would like to see you critically discuss potential sources of vulnerability in relation to your own practice (Emergency department) or healthcare delivery more broadly.
