Assignment Task

Task

Purpose:

On completion of this assignment the student should be able to:

1. Qualitatively describe the structural performance, forces and environmental agents incumbent upon building structures.

2. Qualitatively describe the link between structure, construction sequencing and material performance incumbent upon building structures.

3. Identify, describe and draw a range of design details.

4. Evaluate design alternative in terms of buildability and material performance.

5. Assess relevant clauses of Australian Standards (AS) and National Construction Codes (NCC).

Task:

1. Draw a plan of your current residence.

2. Make a pictorial construction portfolio of the residence.

A similar exercise has been developed for Assessment 2 (Pictorial Journal), however this had a particular focus on materials. In this case, you are to identify the structural and constructive logic of the residence.

The main categories to be explored are:

  • Basement and footings
  • Structure and roofing
  • Framing
  • External works and cladding
  • Interior lining
  • Services

Include a description of the residence from a constructive and structural point of view.

3. Draw and annotate a full section of the residence, from the footings to the roof, including interior linings.

If access to the subfloor and roof is unavailable, assumptions can be made based on the guidance and examples provided in tutorials. Your drawing skills will not be marked, but your ability to communicate and identify major elements will be fundamental in demonstrating your understanding of the construction system.

This course is shared between both architecture students and construction management students. Consequently, we are open to various ways of communicating your report, based on your skills.

4. Redraw the section following the logic of a different construction system For example, if the house has a timber frame, develop a section using double brick or concrete blockwork.

You should provide a written description of each construction system including advantages and disadvantages of each.

5. Develop a service diagram for at least two of the following services:

  • Electricity
  • Water
  • Gas services
  • Sewerage
  • Telecom
  • HVAC
