Bulilding Services Engineering Assignment

Applied project
The subject covers the variety of building services including electrical; mechanical; hydraulic; fire systems; transportation; communication and security. Coordination and integration of these services is vital, both in terms of “buildability” and “life-cycle efficiency” as the project is prepared for handover, then transposed to on-going user satisfaction deliverables.
This assignment will require an investigation of ONE of the services we will be studying. Many of you are employed in the industry and have access to either a currently under-construction project, or a project in the design stage. Your task will be to investigate and report on the characteristics of one service as it applies to that project. Alternatively, you can choose an existing building (e.g. an office building or an apartment) for this project. Please note that residential buildings (class 1) are not recommended.
NOTE: If you do not access to an actual project or an existing building, you can use resources such as published journal articles, manufacturers data (or any reliable resources) to identify a suitable case study. Your task will be to investigate and report on the characteristics of one service in that case study. Please note that residential buildings (class 1) are not recommended.
In this subject, you will quickly grasp the concept that we classify building services into groupings and sub-categorise those groupings into specialities. An example tabulated listing follows. Please note that it is for demonstration purposes only and is in no way exhaustive. Nevertheless, it will provide a starting point as you commence this assignment and select your report topic. With justification, you can study a topic outside these classifications but be sure to gain approval before you delve too deeply into your assignment.
Example:
As an example, if you were to select the mechanical system (i.e. HVAC system) for your project, it would be expected that your report would cover the following items:
1- Front page (subject name, assignment title, group number, students name and number) 2- Table of content
- Project description
- Basic architectural information of the building, including building location, floor plan drawing(s), gross floor area, building class (NCC), and a building
- System description
Let’s assume that the cooling system in your case study is a chilled water system with air handling units (AHUs), and space heating is supplied by a boiler. So, you need to cover the following items:
- Brief description of this system
- Main components:
- Chillers
- Boilers
- Air Handling Units
- Pumps
- Ductwork
Note 1: For each component above, make sure that your report covers an image, technical specification of the manufacturer (or the label attached to the component), component’s main function(s), number and the location on site of each component (discuss why this location) (e.g. one AHU per floor), approximate physical area (m2) occupied by each component, and key design criteria/consideration.
Note 2: Not all items listed in Note 1 are applicable to all components.
Note 3: a drawing detailing how these components are connected to each other must be provided.
- Recommendations:
- Provide suggestions how the existing building service can be improved (e.g., from energy, comfort, and/or safety perspective). Only ONE paragraph.
