BUMGT1100 Introduction to Management
Assessment 2 Study of an organisation 35% (total) Group Assessment Task
Working in groups of 3-5 students, this assessment task requires the following:
- Join a group by self-selecting yourself into a group using the link under Assessment 2 in Moodle - groupings of 3-5 no later than 11.59pm Sunday week 3. If you do not add yourself to a group by this date, you will be allocated to a group and advised via an announcement to your student email. The early timing of group allocation is very important as it can take some time for student groups to start communicating and working together while balancing different Uni and non-Uni priorities.
- Using the knowledge and skills that you have/will obtain throughout weeks 1-9, on Management including the role/s of Managers, Organisations, Communication and working in Groups, Planning, Organising, Leading and Controlling, you will be required to:
- Discuss and agree among your group members a suitable organisation for the focus of this assessment. The organisation can be large, small, family owned, a social enterprise, not for profit, Australian, or Multi-national or Global.
- Identify a suitable person in your group's chosen organisation who you will have access to, to be able to conduct an interview (this can be face-to-face or virtual).
Organisation report including interview with an organisational person - 35%weighting
Each group needs to access the provided email, that you need to send to your identified organisational person introducing the task, your group members, and request for the interview. The email is located under Assessment 2 section in Moodle, and will require some tailoring for each group e.g. your group members. Please do not deviate from this standardised email other than your group member names.
- It is recommended that you send your email to your chosen organisational person well in advance of when you wish to conduct the interview with them.
- Each group will also be provided with 12 interview questions, 3 questions for each of the four Management functions of Planning, Organising, Leading and Controlling. Again, students should use the interview questions and not digress. Interview questions are located under Assessment 2 section in Moodle.
- Each group is required to write a business report due 11.59pm Sunday end of week 10 (1750 words +/- 10% plus approximately 200-300 words for Executive Summary. References and appendices are not included in the wordcount guidelines. Your business report needs to provide a consolidation and reflection on the interview information, discussing the obtained insights from your organisation interview findings and combining this with the theory of the four management functions using recommended report structure (see Library home page for assistance) but as a guide:
- Cover Page (student names, student numbers, wordcount, title of Assessment, unit name and code, unit coordinators name, submission date)
- Table of contents
- Executive Summary (approximately 200-300 words)
- Introduction including method of data gathering (this can be brief, i.e. conducted a phone/face to face interview)
- Findings Planning
- Findings Organising
- Findings Leading
- Findings Controlling
- Brief Conclusion
- References
- Appendix Interview Questions as a minimum
- While your report will present your findings from the interview, you are required to link those findings to key Management and Organisational concepts/functions of Planning, Leading, Organising and Controlling and intext citations and References must be in accordance with APA 7th edition Referencing style (see Library home page for assistance).
- Your report must include a brief Executive Summary (approximately 200-300 words).
- Please refer to the marking guide for guidance on how the business report will be assessed.
- Please note, that the expectation for this group assessment is that each group members contribution in terms of quantity and quality of inputs and results will be relatively even, and as such, the default is that all students of the group will receive the same mark. There is also an expectation that if students believe this process and outcome is at risk, they should manage the situation with relevant interventions early in the process. If, however, students are unable to mitigate any risks within a timely or relevant manner, the Unit Coordinator or Lecturer can assist, but again, the earlier this is raised the more effective the intervention. If student and/or Teaching team intervention is ineffective, a peer review will be needed and following this, the Unit Coordinator or Lecturer has the right to differentiate marks for individual students including 0 marks if appropriate.
