Scenario:
Adam presents to your service today for his initial assessment interview with you.? The receptionist at your service has obtained the following information from Adam:
Adam was recently released from jail where he served 4 months for a drink driving conviction (DUI).? The conviction was the result of Adam being apprehended for a third DUI offence.?
Adam is 23 years of age; Adam is currently estranged from his long-term partner Billie.? Billie is pregnant with their child and about to give birth.? Adam has been told by Billie he has to “clean up his act and get his life together” if he wants to rekindle their relationship and live with her and their child.
Adam is currently seeking employment; he is a qualified “tradie” but can’t find anyone to take him on because of his past history of drink driving convictions.?? He will also be without a Driver’s Licence for a further 12 months.
Adam is getting “a bit down” about his inability to find employment and to get his relationship back on track with Billie.? Since leaving jail, Adam’s friends have been trying to get him to go out and start drinking again, he believes if he starts again, he won’t know when to stop and he will lose Billie and their child.?? He is here to see if you can help him, you are a community service worker at the local Community Centre.????

Benny is a young 17-year-old man who was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at a very young age.? Benny and his family recently moved into the local area from interstate.?They do not know anyone in the area or what services are available.?
The family consist of Dad who was recently promoted to the position of Manager of a local hardware firm, mum who is currently unemployed and two younger siblings who recently commenced Year 7 at the local High School.??Benny was in a support unit at his previous school but the local high school does not have a unit.
Benny has minimal language skills and some compulsive behaviours but enjoys spending time with others his own age. In addition to living with ASD, Benny also has some physical health problems including a seizure disorder and gastrointestinal problems.?
Benny’s parents accompany Benny to the Youth Centre today seeking advice and help regarding local service options for Benny.? You are a Youth Worker.???

Amaara is a young West African refugee of Muslim faith who was settled into the local area with her family 9 months ago.? Amaara was referred to the Centre because she is suffering from anxiety and depression.? You are a Community Support Worker with a local community organisation.???
Today, you have completed your initial assessment of Amaara.?? Throughout the assessment interview Amaara demonstrated behaviours consistent with anxiety; she stated she felt “terrible” initially but after a while her anxiety “settled’ and she was able to tell you her story.?She is fearful that her father will find out that she is talking to someone outside the home about “personal business”. She has a mistrust with authority figures like Police and government agencies as in her own country these people shared information with the community which led to public ridicule and sometimes public torture.
Amaara demonstrated a good level of English language skills including being able to complete all the required forms prior to the interview.??
