Case study
You are doing a clinical placement on a busy medical ward, and you are working with a Registered Nurse (RN). Both of you attend to Ismail (aged 36 years) who suffered a Thoracic (T11) vertebral injury at the age of 18 years and is being admitted for investigation of anaemla. Ismail is seated in his wheelchair on arrival and is accompanied by his older brother Salman. As Ismall and his family follow Muslim faith, they use a halal diet. Other than the impacts of his spinal injury, Ismail is able to self-manage his activities of daily living and communicate well, having lived in Australia since the age of 5 years when his family moved from India.
The RN turns to face Ismail's brother Salman and makes the following comment, "Hello there - who do we have here today? Thanks for bringing Ismail in for his admission. How long has he been unwell for? Do you know? I have his chart here with me and just want to ask you some questions regards his medical history if that's OK? It says something here about him needing some kind of special diet we'll need to sort that out, because he's going to eat proper food you know!"
After completing Ismail's admission, you walk back to the nurse's station with the RN. The RN turns to you and states "What a weird religion stops you from eating normal food - no wonder he is anaemic. Why would anyone want to be in that religion?"
