Opportunity Assessment and Identification

How do we make sure that we are designing for a feeling of empowerment, inclusion, community, love, or beauty in these tough contexts?Jocelyn Wyatt, Chief Executive Officer of IDEO.org

Societies face several challenges with a high impact on the overall development and evolution. That being said, some of the major issues include: climate change, sustainability, limited access to sanitation, poverty, poor infrastructure, low levels of education and overall low levels of economic activity that affects employment or overall country development.

To that end, you have been appointed by a task force of the world bank to identify opportunities on how to reframe one of the above-mentioned issues and provide a deep understanding of the people impacted by the respective social problem.

To do so, you will have to select a country of your choice and use both theoretical and practical dimensions to provide a detailed analysis by answering the following questions:

What is the challenge? Where is this happening? provide date to substantiate the respective problem, its size and impact

What is driving or causing it? What makes it so important for that specific country/area?

Who are the people most impacted (general characteristics and main pains)? How do they behave?

Are there any possible solutions already developed? Why are they not good enough?

How might we solve this challenge (initial thoughts and ideas on how this problem can be addressed)

To do so, you will have to prepare a 2000-word report that utilizes frameworks, design thinking principles, wide research, and your own interpretation of the critical issues necessary to address the underlying complexity.

Note.

Students must define and offer a context of the initial challenge prior before trying to reframe it.

Any identified causes of the challenge MUST be qualified with data and statistics

The intervention SHOULD be proactive in nature

You are NOT expected to provide a persona and an empathy map for the selected target group.

The submission SHOULD be a word document. Links to google docs page or similar will NOT BE ACCEPTED.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

Any work submitted by a student in this course for academic credit must be the student's own work. If you present, as your own idea, any material copied, paraphrased, or extensively drawn upon, you are plagiarizingunless you give full citations for your sources. Of course, you may make full use of ideas, arguments and information obtained from books etc. but you must make clear which portion of your paper is not your own and provide a detailed reference to the original source.

Assignments which violate Hults Honor code may not be revised. In the first instance of plagiarism, the plagiarized assessment will be given a grade of zero and will result in automatic Disciplinary Probation. You may also be required to rewrite the plagiarized assignment for no additional credit.

Subsequent violations of the Honor code are assessed on a case by case basis before the Academic Standards Committee and may result in sanctions up to and including dismissal from the program.

You are responsible for ensuring that you have read and understood the section entitled Academic Integrity in the Student Handbook. If you have any questions about that material, please speak to your instructor.
