Introduction


Technology today is deeply intertwined with the prevention of crime and even the committing of crime. The advances in technology have also created opportunities for deviant behaviour through novel and sophisticated ways (Asli, M. R. 2023). The digital world has disturbed the geographic and social distance, and with it, it introduced cybercrimes (identity theft, ransomware, online grooming, fake AI-driven manipulations, etc.) (Aldridge, 2023). These events are symptomatic of the ironic aspect of technology as both a means of social control and a producer of transgression. Since the early days of forensic science to artificial intelligence and predictive policing, the role of technology in criminology has kept developing at a very high rate (Asli, M. R. 2023). This essay critically examines the way in which technological development has influenced crime trends in various parts of the world and the potential it offers in preventing crimes, as well as the problem of new forms of digital forms of criminality.

2. Technological Evolution and Timeline


The connection between crime control and technology has developed strongly in the last forty years. With every new technological breakthrough, the way societies define, prevent, and react to crime has transformed (Asli, M. R. 2023). Although innovations have enhanced surveillance and policing effectiveness, this has facilitated new areas of deviant behaviour and opportunities to commit crime. Some criminology theories, like the Routine Activity and Strain Theory, emphasise that technological change benefits crime prevention, at the same time opening new frontiers to deviant behaviour to characterise the trends observed in each decade of technological advancement.

In the development of contemporary criminology, technological advances in the field of law enforcement have played a key role. According to Foucault (2019), his concept of surveillance, some tools of surveillance like the CCTV and biometrics, enhance the social regulation beyond the physical space into what others call a digital panopticon. Equally, the Routine Activity Theory asserts that technology may be the cause of crime as well as a crime deterrent, according to the extent to which criminal offenders take advantage of new opportunities (Andresen & Ha, 2017). As an illustration, databases and analytics are powerful tools to enhance investigation; nevertheless, a digital infrastructure can be invaded by developers or other individuals using it to commit malicious actions (Auzeen Shariati & Guerette, 2017). Altogether, the history of technological development illustrates both positive and negative stories.


3. How Technology is Influencing the Rate of Crime


Technology has exerted a significant effect on the level of crime, both by increasing the capacity of the law enforcers, as well as by transforming the criminal opportunities. Data analytics, closed-circuit television (CCTV), GPS tracking, and biometric identification systems have been useful in mitigating conventional crimes like burglary, car theft, and violent attacks. The model of predictive policing, which is used to examine the trends in crime data, enables police departments to better deploy their resources effectively as well as prevent crime before it takes place (Auzeen Shariati & Guerette, 2017). As an example, installations of CCTV that are spread in the streets have been related to a decrease in street crimes and an increase in the responsibility of offenders (Interpol, 2022). On the same note, the situational crime prevention principles show the effect of technology in altering criminal behaviour by increasing unfitness and decreasing rewards (Auzeen et al. 2017). However, with the proliferation of cyber environments, enterprising criminals are still using emerging vulnerabilities. By and large, technology has helped to achieve quantifiable changes in certain types of crime, yet has also altered the deviance terrain, moving a lot of it into cyberspace.


4. New Patterns of Crime and Deviance


Cyber Fraud and Identity Theft


In the 21st century, cyber fraud and identity theft have become one of the most common digital crimes. Phishing, malware, and social engineering are some of the methods employed by offenders to access personal and financial information. One of the biggest ones can be the 2017 Equifax data breach, where hackers, on behalf of about 147 million individuals, gained access to sensitive data, including names, addresses, and Social Security numbers. This case was a revelation on corporate cybersecurity weaknesses and how big data sets could be turned against them (FTC, 2024). There are long-term effects that victims experience that include loss of money and reputational damage, among other things, due to the increasing overlap of technology, privacy, and trust (Foucault, 2019). Ransomware Attacks


Ransomware is also another type of digital crime that is especially targeting organisations and public services. In 2017, the WannaCry attack caused the outage of more than 200,000 systems in 150 countries, and one of them, the National Health Service (NHS) of the UK. Cyberattacks made hospitals cancel appointments and surgeries, which proves that they can put the lives of humans at risk. The police are struggling a lot to trace offenders who work across jurisdictions and have highly advanced encryption to protect their identities.


Deepfake and Artificial Intelligence Manipulation


Digital deviance has never had a new aspect because of the progress of artificial intelligence. Deepfake is also a technology that misuses non-consenting pornography, fraud, and political disinformation, and that is fueled by image manipulation or video alterations to produce false information that is realistic. When DeepNude's app generated fake nude photos of women, the app, created with the help of AI, introduced a moral panic and was widely condemned (Hao, 2019). On the same note, political deepfakes have been applied to disseminate misinformation in elections, which causes the population to lose confidence in digital media. The issue that the police face is how to draw a line between genuine evidence and outdated content, and this concerns the issue of accountability and consent in the digital era.


Criminological Implications


These crimes that are up and coming create a lot of moral panic as people in society cannot cope with the change in technology. Psychological, financial, and social damages are likely to be caused to the victims, and the justice systems are limited in both technical capacity and legal jurisdiction. Technology has provided a friction-free space of deviance in which anonymity and speed make it difficult to be detected (FTC, 2024). Together, the cases mentioned above demonstrate that innovation transforms crime and control in new ways and requires new approaches that involve cybersecurity, educational, and cross-national collaboration to deal with the dynamic character of digital deviance.


5. Digital Crime on the Rise at Globe


Online crime has grown at an alarming rate all over the world, leaving it as one of the most critical concerns among current law enforcement. However, as demonstrated by INTERPOL (2023), cases of cybercrime have increased by over 60 percent in every part of the world since the COVID-19 pandemic, with the most commonly reported offences being phishing, ransomware, and online scams. UNODC (2022) points out that in developing parts of Asia, financial and identity-based cybercrimes have grown exponentially in connection with the growing internet penetration and reduced digital regulation. Ransomware attacks have grown in Europe by 45% over the last three years (2020-2023) and in North America by the highest financial losses, with estimates estimated to be over USD 10 billion per year (National Crime Agency, 2023).
The international character of these crimes poses significant difficulties in the investigation and prosecution. Many jurisdictions where cybercriminals act covertly have been achieved through anonymity systems, cryptocurrencies, and dark web networks in order to go undetected (FTC, 2024). On a criminological level, the current crime wave in the digital world can also be explained through the Strain Theory (Merton, 1938), which suggests that strain is a condition experienced by individuals or groups of individuals unable to attain an approved, socially acceptable goal by means other than legal. Thus, technology, particularly in the areas that struggle with unemployment or inequality or lack of economic prospects, can be used to gain material prosperity in some unlawful methods of hacking, identity theft or ransomware.


6. Conclusion


To conclude, where technology and crime come together, there is a paradox that the day you provide innovative protection, as well as creating challenges for maintaining law and order. Technology has simplified our lives considerably and made lives less dangerous in numerous ways; however, it has brought about a problem of its own. Individuals currently utilise the internet and computers to commit crimes such as money stealing, spreading fake news or hacking other individuals. Though cameras, internet surveillance, and intelligence gadgets aid in police apprehension of criminals, they are not able to stop bad activities. In a bid to remain safe, all people should understand how to use things and rules. The world governments and the people should collaborate in efforts to make the internet a safer place. Lastly, the technology ought to be beneficial to people, not so that it can be abused to hurt people..
