Assessment Aims

In this assessment you will demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of ONE of the body systems covered in the course, and how it may be impacted by a disease state. An understanding of Human Biology is vital to managing health care. Health care professionals are expected to both know individual body parts, but also how systems work, so that they have a holistic view of the patient and the patient’s physiological profile.

Increasingly, health professionals share information through digital media. This can take the form of online brochures, ePosters, and PowerPoint presentations. This assignment gives you the opportunity to prepare a presentation which can be destined for a group of colleagues in a face-to-face encounter, but also for an online platform such as a blog or information page.

The assignment addresses the following course objectives:

CO1. Explain the relationships between anatomy and physiology for body systems

CO2. Describe the structure and function of the immune, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems.

CO4. Describe continuity in relation to physiological and anatomical changes occurring over a lifespan

Assessment description

For this assignment, you will produce a PowerPoint presentation and either (a) its accompanying script, or (b) an audio (voice over PowerPoint) recording. The presentation should be 10-15 minutes or equivalent script (1800 words maximum). You must submit your script as a word file (please do so even if you include audio recording). You must also indicate which part of the script refers to each slide number. If you choose to provide an audio recording with your slides, this must still be submitted as a PowerPoint file.

The assessment task will involve preparing a PowerPoint presentation on ONE of the body systems covered in the course (see assessment instructions below).

Your presentation will include two parts:

  1. A detailed explanation of the normal physiology of your chosen body system. This will include the key structures or components, and a description of their physiological function/process.
  2. A response to a case study. You will apply your understanding of the body system, by responding to a case study and explaining what would happen to the normal physiology in a disease state or where a significant external stimulus has altered homeostasis.

The information you include in both part 1 and part 2 of your presentation must be evidence-based. Whilst you may refer to course content to build your initial understanding of concepts, you should also conduct additional research and locate credible academic sources to support your presentation. Aim to include at least 5 peer-reviewed academic sources.

Your ‘audience’ for the presentation is a colleague (fellow student), and you must engage them through your presentation, both visually and through the script. This should be a professional presentation with the aim of explaining to the ‘audience’ the relevant processes.  This is a formal presentation, so although you may begin with a welcome to the viewer in the script, you must use formal, academic language and the correct technical terms.

Assessment instructions

To assist you in creating your presentation, first download the following resources:

  • Assessment 2: PowerPoint Template
  • Assessment 2: Presentation Rubric

1. Choose your body system

There are several body systems to choose from. You MUST choose from the options that are listed below, and each system has specific instructions outlining what content you need to include for parts 1 and 2 of the presentation. Access the body system information sheets by clicking on the links below:

  • Respiratory system

2. Title slide

Once you have selected a body system, begin with your title slide (slide 1). Develop a title that describes your presentation, and input this on the title slide. At the beginning of your presentation script or audio, you will need to introduce both yourself, as the presenter, and the topic (title) you will be discussing.

3. Complete part 1

Part 1 of your presentation should include a detailed explanation of the normal biology of your chosen body system. This will include the key structures or components, and a description of their physiological function/process. The body system instructions linked above contain additional detail specific to that system, so make sure you address all required areas. Generally speaking, the more detail that you can provide the better (whilst still being mindful of the presentation length requirements). You are encouraged to use diagrams to support your explanation, and if you do so should refer to them directly in your script.

It is likely your response to part 1 will be spread across multiple slides. It is up to you how many slides you spend on this part of your presentation, but ensure you consider the overall time limit of your presentation.

4. Complete part 2

Following your presentation of the normal biology and physiological function of your body system, you will respond to the provided case study for part 2. The case study specific to your body system is contained in the information linked above.

You will provide a brief overview of the case study, and then present your response by explaining what would happen to the body system's normal biology in the disease state or state of altered homeostasis.

Your response to part 2 may be discussed on one single slide, or may be spread across multiple slides. It is up to you how many slides you spend on this part of your presentation, but ensure you consider the overall time limit of your presentation and ensure you have responded to ALL components/questions of the case study.
