This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and implement workplace sustainability policies and to modify the policy to suit changed circumstances.
The unit applies to individuals with managerial responsibilities who undertake work developing approaches to create, monitor and improve strategies and policies within workplaces. These individuals also engage with a range of relevant stakeholders and specialists.
'Sustainability' in this unit refers to a broad approach that focuses on the minimisation of an organisations social, economic and environmental impact, as well as proactive value creation in these areas.
Assessment Process
The assessment is designed to help you gather evidence of your competence against the requirements of the unit of study (as outlined above) while applying your learning in practice. Your evidence may take a variety of forms and must be:
- Authentic your own work
- Valid related to the competency
- Sufficient appropriate quantity and quality
- Current recent proof of your skills and knowledge
When should I submit this assessment?
For the recommended timeframe for completing your assessment please refer to your training plan.
Use this assessment kit to complete your responses to the assessment, attaching additional evidence and documentation as appropriate. Please ensure all additional documents are clearly labelled so that your assessor understands the relevance to specific parts of the assessment.
Assessment Submission and Feedback
Submit your assessment online viamyAIM. Once submitted, your assessment will be assessed and feedback returned to you, also viamyAIM. Upon completion of all the assessment requirements you will receive an overall assessment of Competent or Not Yet Competent for the unit of study. If further work is required to achieve an assessment of Competent, you will be given one (1) opportunity to resubmit your work.
Upon successful completion and being deemed competent, you will be eligible for a Statement of Attainment. If you are enrolled in a full qualification, you will be issued with a Certificate and Transcript upon successful completion of all of your units.
Video evidence
You may be required to submit video evidence for part of this assessment. Ideally you will upload your video evidence to YouTube (as a private link) and supply the link to your assessor. Seek permission from any participants that are involved and ensure they are aware of the purpose of the video, i.e. to assess your competence in a task.
Technical tools for completing this assessment
To complete this assessment, you need access to a computer with internet and word processing and spreadsheet software, plus other relevant programs to develop documentation as required. You may also need a smart phone or other audio/video recording device.

Glossary of Instructional Words
Your assessment uses a range of instructional words, such as compare and list. These words will guide you to the level of detail you must provide in your answers. When the instructional words are used, each student must provide at least three to four sentences (a paragraph) as a response. Use the below glossary to guide you on interpreting the words, detail and word count across this assessment.
- Analyse This means you should break an issue down into its component parts, discuss and show how they relate. You should discuss the issue in detail and methodically.
- Define This means you should explain the meaning or interpretation of a term or concept in your own words, including any qualities which are essential to understanding.
- Describe This means you should outline the most noticeable qualities or features of an idea, topic or the focus of the question.
- Discuss This means you must point out the important issues or features, key points, possible interpretations, and debate through argument. You should provide reasons for and against.

Assessment Conditions
Wherever possible, assessment should be undertaken within or in relation to a place of work where activities in the Assessment Tasks might reasonably occur. For the purposes of assessment, a place of work can include:
- Your own current employer or a previous employer
- A business you are familiar with (e.g. one owned and/or operated by a friend or family member)
- A local small business
- A community group, association, charity or not-for-profit organisation in which you have an interest

Part A: Review implementation of sustainability policies
Carefully read the following:
Review the implementation of the sustainability policies and procedures by conducting and distributing asurveyand submitting the responses. Develop and implement the survey using the instructions that follow.
Content of survey:Include 7 10 questions that gather information on the outcomes of the sustainability policies and procedures. Outcomes can be metrics such as reduced energy or water consumption, or they can relate to other objectives of the policies and procedures such as increased engagement and awareness.

Distribution: You may use an online survey tool to distribute your survey and receive and collate responses. Or you may distribute the survey internally using a method such as email, then manually collate the responses.

Part B: Document outcomes and identify trends
Carefully read the following:
Develop a one-page progress report on the implementation of the policies and procedures on sustainability. This report is to be sent to key personnel such as senior managers. It must include the following:
- outcomes of implementing the policies and procedures
- trends that require remedial action to improve performance
Outcomes could include the achievement of sustainability targets such as reduced energy consumption, increased engagement and awareness, improved brand reputation.
Trends could include non-compliance with procedures that require remedial action such as raising awareness through communication and/or training.
The outcomes and trends that you report must be consistent with the survey that you conducted in Part A. For example, if your survey indicated low awareness of policies and procedures, it would be appropriate to report this as a trend.
Attach the one-page progress report that you have developed as evidence for this Part.
Part C: Modify policies and procedures to incorporate improvements
Carefully read the following:
Undertake continuous improvement for your sustainability policies and procedures. This could be in the form of:
- Amendments to existing policy/procedure documents
- Addition of new procedures or processes
- A re-prioritisation of sustainability activities or allocation of resources
- A response to changes in the organisational context or operating environment
- A response to changes in regulation, legislation or codes of practice.
Include copies of your new or amended policy/procedure/practice as evidence for this Task.
