  • You need to include a minimum of three peer-reviewed sources plus additional items for an A; please look at the rubrics below for more
  • In the bibliography, you must cite sources following the correct APA formatting Labelling a source as ‘peer-reviewed’ will not suffice.
  • Only one foreign-language source is All other sources in the bibliography must be in English.

Structure and layout

  • Your essay must follow the template for the case study analysis:

  • You must use the layout specified

Sections

  • You must summarise the case study and draw attention to the primary features of the
  • The evaluation and the solutions/recommendations sections should be the most substantial
  • Solutions and recommendations can be grouped as a single chapter; if so, have a separate paragraph for recommendations so that the latter becomes
  • You need to take into account the effect of your solutions on the overall business As a simple example, increasing the pay of employees might sound good on paper but how would it be compatible with the business remaining sustainable in the long run?
  • All sections of your analysis must be supported by in-text citations to increase
  • You can use statistics, stock market data, forecasts, etc. to provide a realistic
  • Especially the recommendations and solutions should be based on sources in order to ground your thinking in verifiable
  • At the very minimum, you must address and discuss more than half of the questions in the discussion file accompanying the case
  • You will be given case studies that depict well-known companies about 3-5 years While you should take into account what has happened since then, you have the following options:
    • Maybe what the company has done to address the situation is the optimum If so, outline and explain why. This still needs to be discussed and supported with researched materials.
    • Maybe the company should have taken another path at that point in What would you have done in their shoes? This option effectively means that you treat the case study as a scenario to be solved. You can simply provide your own solution or you can ask how your approach compares to what the company has actually done?
    • Maybe the problem outlined in the case study still exists or was only partially In this case, you should state what has improved since then and how you would tackle the remaining problematic areas. Of course, you can also critique and rectify the very changes that have been made.

HOW TO ANALYSE A CASE STUDY

  • Assess the context and situation:
    • What is happening?
    • Who are the protagonists?
    • What are the main components of the problem?
  • Identify the key Write them down.
  • Define the main problem in your own words: what needs fixing?
    • If there are additional issues, order them
    • What information have you got and what information do you need?
  • Outline your objectives: what needs achieving?
    • Identify resources and approaches that might help
    • Generate ideas and/or alternative
  • Choose the most appropriate solution from various
  • Decide on an action plan and outline how to implement
  • Consider the feasibility of your approach: how realistic is it?

How to approach the case study

Read the material carefully and ask yourself these questions:

  • What are the main issues?
  • Why have these arisen?
  • What would happen if nothing were done?
  • What hard evidence is there that the situation needs action?

Analyse the situation and ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is the background to the case study?
  • What research could I use to understand the issues?
  • What solutions are desirable and/or possible?
  • What solutions are suggested/supported by research?
  • What are the legal and ethical considerations?

Common problems in case study analysis Students lose marks when their analysis fails to:

  • Identify the real problem and missing the underlying issues
  • Identify for whom the issue is a problem
  • Examine possible alternatives
  • Present a realistic implementation plan
  • Support their ideas with evidence from research, studies or theories
