Question Task Id: 0

Earthquakes and volcanoes create natural disasters that affect many millions of people the world over. This task requires a response to the question:

Do we have the technology to protect us from volcanoes and earthquakes?

Use two different tectonic disasters (one earthquake, one volcanic) since the year 2000 to give context to the use of technology involved in predicting/preventing the disasters

You are required to carry out research to:

  1. Identify the geological cause of the natural disaster and associated hazards.
  2. Analyse the impact of the natural hazard on the biosphere and the natural disaster directly on humans. For the volcanic eruption also include the impact on the atmosphere.
  3. Evaluate the use and effectiveness of technologies (see page 52 syllabus) involved in predicting a natural hazard and preventing it becoming a natural disaster.
  4. Suggest solutions that can be used to minimise the effect of the natural disaster
  5. Include relevant diagrams, pictures, graphs and/or tables
  6. Correctly reference any secondary resources (including diagrams pictures, graphs and/or  tables) used in a bibliography (provided on a separate MS Word document in Harvard referencing style.
  7.  Evaluate three resources used for their validity (trustworthiness) and reliability(consistency)
