Engineering Structures, Materials and Analysis CIS106-2
- Subject Code :
CIS106-2
TOPIC
Instruction: Create a word-processed report including details of the answers to part 1 and 2 for this project
that the group has solved.
A shaft as described in Figure 1 is supported by smooth journal bearings at A and B that only exert vertical reactions
on the shaft.
Part 1 – Analytical calculations
1) Do the necessary calculations and draw the shear and moment diagrams. (25 marks)
2) Determine the shaft’s smallest diameter d if the allowable bending stress is ?allow=180 MPa. (25 marks)
Part 2 – Computer simulations
Use Comsol Multiphysics to model the described problem.
1) Use the obtained diameter d to build the geometry of the problem in Comsol Multiphysics (3D, Structural
Mechanics, stationary study). Discuss how you modelled the bearing and the distributed forces. (15 marks)
2) Plot the stress distribution and the total displacement (or the deformed geometry) for the shaft. (20 marks)
3) At what distance from A does the maximum deformation or displacement occur? Is this consistent with question
1)? If not, why the difference? (15 marks)
We assume that the shaft is made of steel (Density of 7800 kg/m3
, Young Modulus of 210 GPa and Poisson ratio of
0.25)
