Enhancing Youth Health Through Social Work Intervention

Introduction

As sociologists intending to render social services that will help improve human health, I chose PCYC Auburn as my preferred placement to deepen my aspirations in community services meant to improve the health of man. PCYC Auburn is a charity organisation that was founded with the sole intention of fighting the effects of sedentary lifestyles which end affecting the youth in Australia. According to a study carried out by the Australia Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) (2021), in 1 in 5 (19 percent) of youth aged 15-17 year olds met the sedentary-screened based behaviour. On the negative note, this has been responsible for the common cases of cardio-respiratory diseases, obesity and overweight, musculoskeletal and metabolic health issues, cognitive deficits, non-communicable disease like heart diseases, type 2 diabetes, and cancers diagnosed among the youth in the country. Thankfully, PCYC Auburn has set out to challenge the possible causes of sedentary lifestyles by offering and its effects on the health of the youth by offering gym and fitness spaces, specious basketball courts, well-equipped martial art rooms, dance rooms, a multi-purpose learning room, and caf (PCYC Police Citizens Youth Clubs NSW, n.d).

My role as a social worker volunteer was supervising the use of the facilitys equipment to ensure they are in a proper condition for use and ensuring exercise sessions are completed in an appropriate manner by aiding the instructors by supporting the facility users in their performances. I also engaged with new users and existing users to ensure their sessions were enjoyable and served the purpose for their participation. I also had access to the organisations records such as audit records, revenue sources, organisation board and hierarchy, and the PCYC Auburn about us information.

PCYC Auburn main partners are the community and the New South Wales police as its main partner to implement its fitness and physical activity programs.

Therefore, to achieve my objective of contributing towards improving the health of humans, I intervened in the exercise process by (1) helping the instructors in guiding the exercising teams, (2) documenting the session processes to enable me guide well the trainees as well as for my assessment 1 submission and academic report reflection.

By and large, my placement at PCYC Auburn is and was a memorable experience for my knowledge in sociology. In particular, the placement allowed me the chance to grow deeper into the operations of social work, the functioning of social service (charitable organisations) in helping improve human lives. This learning contract was submitted for Assessment 1 and I will be reflecting in details on my placement in the portfolio.
