Assessment 2: Ethics Paper (1500 Words)

Using appropriate references, write 1500 words reflecting on the ethics, politics or practicalities behind your research, or else on the specific methods you plan to use in your project [focus on one or more of these topics depending on what you judge to be most important]. If you are writing a purely theoretical thesis, write an assignment situating your topic in wider debates and explaining the purpose and significance of your project: i.e., why bother writing about it? The point of this exercise is to write a draft of a core section of your research proposal that utilises material covered in the first part of the Research course and get feedback on it. If you will not go on to write a thesis, your assignment will be on a topic relevant to your work, career plans, or personal interests, and you will be making the first steps towards developing a research proposal in the same way as all other students in the course. At this stage of the semester, you need to apply what you say to your particular research project, rather than talk of research in general. That is why one of the assessment criteria is the progress you made in your literature review. As a general guide, you should use around 10 relevant references, either from the Research Strategies course or from the specific research field you focus on.
