“[L]aw is one of the principal means of ensuring equality in dignity and rights among individuals, and of curbing any propaganda, any form of organization or any practice which is based on ideas or theories referring to the alleged superiority of racial or ethnic groups or which seeks to justify or encourage racial hatred and discrimination in any form.” (UNESCO Constitution)
Choose one country, which has experienced institutionalised racism (i.e. laws, which are specifically aimed at disadvantaging a particular ethnic group) in the past. Identify the particular ethnic group, which was the subject of the racist laws and briefly explore the historical context of these laws. Evaluate how much progress the present-day country has made in overcoming this history.
