Gap Analysis:
Gap Analysis:
You need to find four jobs you would be interested in, and do a comparison of job requirements - identifying gaps in skills, education, and experience when compared to your current profile. Refer below for detailed instructions.
The purpose of this assignment is to help you start along the path of enhancing your current career, engaging in a new one, or understanding what you as a manager who hires analytic talent must know about the skill sets. The object is to find four jobs you would be interested in from the perspective of any of the above, and do a comparison of the job requirements, identifying those gaps in skills, education, and experience.
1) Find four jobs posted online that are related to the analytics areas of your interest. Use any combination of the following words as a starting point for a search, e.g. Data Engineer or Analytics Specialist. It may take a few tries to get the right combination:
Analyst Coordinator Engineer Researcher
Analytics Data Junior Scientist
Business Digital Manager Senior
Consultant Director Research Specialist
2) LinkedIn, CareerBuilder, GGU Careers, Monster.com, Dice, or the website of any company are good sources for finding these kinds of jobs. You may even find a job at your own company.
3) Review the responsibilities of each job. What will the person do in this job? Assess the skills and experience requested by the employer. Evaluate your own qualifications/ understanding and compare these to the stated needs: 1) Do you have the skills? 2) Do you have the years of experience? 3) What about education? 4) What gaps remain and how can you fill the gaps? If you are a hiring manager, do you understand what is needed?
4) Create an Excel spreadsheet using the Skills GAP Analysis Template given below:
List Experience, Education, Skills (each unique skill) down the side
Enter company name and job title across the top line, replacing Job #1, Job #2, Job #3, Job # 4.

5) For each job:
Enter Education and Years of Experience required
In the intersecting squares of Skills and Jobs, assess each skill against your experience/understanding by entering E, M, or A (Entry level, Mid-level, Advanced) If that skill is not in a particular job description, leave the square blank.
In the last column labeled Comments, explain very briefly how you might raise your experience level.
