CASE STUDY
Read the case study, healthcare workers and their vulnerability and take notes as you read. After evaluating the given case study, prepare an evaluative report using the report guidelines given below.
Healthcare workers and their vulnerability
My name is Julia. I'm a healthcare worker employed in a reputed aged care facility in Auckland for over five years. I suffered from cumulative spinal trauma and overexertion injuries which caused my back severely injured. I provide care to residents aged eighty years and above who are mostly suffering from cardiac, obesity, diabetes, surgical and other medical conditions. My work, like other caregivers, involved helping residents to meet their everyday needs and requirements. I support residents to carry out personal care activities such as showering, cleaning, administering medication, providing rehabilitation support and many more. Because of the required job duties, my job involves many liftings and moving tasks, and working for long hours. During one of my night shifts, while I was performing my duties, taking no extra help from colleague, I injured my back. I never reported the incident to others colleague and my supervisor. I took a few days off from work as my back hurt and returned to work with having some mild persistent pain in my back. In several instances at the workplace, I suffered from back injuries. One day, while walking towards the resident unit to stop an activated smoke alarm, I tripped over open electrical wiring, a hazard where no caution sign was placed for people walking in the corridor. The electricity cord was used to supply power to one fridge inside the caf as the nearer electric plug was broken and not working. I reported the issue to my Facility Manager, however, no action was undertaken to remove the wire from the commonly walked space. A major noticeable incident that happens to me was the time I slipped into the washroom. During a morning shift, I was assigned to shower the resident and suddenly I slipped into the washroom and experienced severe low back and right leg pain. Though I returned home in normal condition after the shift ended and had some rest at home, later started having trouble moving and walking. I reported the injury incident to my manager along with the severity of the pain and requested two day's rest period. By the next day my pain became extreme and intolerable, and my partner had to rush me to the Emergency Health Centre. After General Physician examination, I was also seen by a neurologist, orthopaedic surgeon, neurosurgeon, physiotherapist, and a chiropractor. I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease, lumbar strain, and herniated discs. Several X-rays, a couple of MRIs and a discogram were performed for further investigation. Relevant surgery was done to replace the discs. To prove that my diagnosed health issues were caused due to work-related tasks, I had to seek ACC workers compensation support. The battle almost took a year and finally, the decision was in my favour that the injury was work-related. I had to undergo many assessment steps before I can be permitted to take up light modified work duties where I was employed. Because of my injured back, I could not perform many tasks as smoothly as I did them before. I required help when changing bed sheets and vacuuming for a long time. I needed help to pull and push the mechanical equipment to lift residents. It was hard to even sit for long hours in the same place. To support all my co-workers, I become a member of the Health and Safety Committee in my organisation. I recognize that healthcare workers are vulnerable, as the job duties can be challenging and ensure that they are well supported with guidelines in practice. Therefore, every organisation must work towards zero-lift policies and healthcare facilities must provide permanent modified light duty for the injured healthcare workers. Healthcare organisation needs to establish a safe culture to take care of their staff. I love my profession because caring for residents and receiving their trust always touch us deeply. I feel proud of being a healthcare worker and providing care to senior people and building trustful relationships. I strongly believe that every healthcare worker must be trained on health and safety skills and be supported with relevant policies and procedures.
