For this assignment you are to choose two concepts from the first 3 lecture topics (Refer to the lecture slides for Topics 1, 2 or 3 and the first 3 topics in the Study Guide).

Next, choose an everyday communication event that you have observed between two people. For example, it might be two co-workers interacting in a team meeting, a couple conversing while they share a coffee at the local cafe, a customer complaining at the front counter of a retail shop. You are free to choose any communication event that you have observed.

Next analyse that communication event by applying the two communication concepts that you have chosen from Topic 1, 2 or 3 to explain what happened in that observed communication event.

Use the following question to guide your essay discussion:

How do the two chosen concepts enhance understanding of the meaning of communication events and the relationship between the participants?

Use a minimum of 5 academic sources.

Give your essay a title such as:

How an understanding of Kinesics and Haptics can enhance comprehension of a communication event.

Paralanguage and Proxemics. How they enhance understanding of communication events.

INTRODUCTION (paragraph 1) Contextualisation:

I have provided some explanation of communication concepts in general (the process and key terms perhaps).

I have explained the setting of the observation event (place, people, topic of discussion, function of the interaction). Purpose: I have clearly named the two concepts (with citation) and described the purpose of the essay.

The purpose of this essay is to apply / describe / analyse the communication event by applying the concepts of X ( author year) and Y (author year) to the communication event. Thesis statement: I have briefly stated how each concept provided a deeper understanding of the event.

The concept of X provided a deeper understanding of the emotional / cultural content of the event more deeply.
