Assessment 2: Project Report and Presentation (Group):

Australian manufacturing is a diverse and vibrant industry that plays a significant role in the economy. Manufacturing is an important driver of innovation for the economy responsible for a quarter of research and development investment by businesses.

Given this backdrop, the Global Supply Chain Management Simulation V2 byJanice H. Hammond published by Harvard Business Review puts you in the role of a key decision maker for manufacturing organisations operating in the telecommunication industry. Operations management is the engine that drives a business. You will begin with an overview of the heart of that engine managing the production process. Review the contract specifications as well as the production process by walking through the Production Floor and making forecasts using the simulation game. You will also analyse the receiving department functions of managing the supply chain and material inventories to ensure client needs can be met. In order to grow the business, you will choose which new contracts to pursue and to optimize their receiving, production and shipping departments accordingly. This growing business then challenges you to manage both the human and facility resources in order to meet capacity challenges. Customer satisfaction is a key metric for success. And finally, the company puts you in complete control over all areas of operations at the New Branch, with the challenge to build the most profitable company possible through the capstone module.

Assignment 2 Intent: This assignment will enable students investigate, analyse, critique and reflect on the operations and supply chain management processes such as sourcing, production, forecasting, inventory to name a few, through the use of a HBR simulation game that produces specific business outcomes and present key findings to the class in the form of an e-poster.

Assignment 2 structure: The assignment 2 includes 3 parts, namely A, B and C (30%):

Part A Playing simulation game: Playing the HBR operation simulation game individually is compulsory for all students and Part B and Part C of this assignment is very much dependent on playing the game successfully ie completing Part A. The game consists of 4 modules 1 4 and there are no marks allocated for this task.

Part B- Reflection report: Based on Part A the group will write the Critical Reflection Essay of 1500-2000 words for the HBR Operations Simulation Modules 1 4 played successfully (20 marks)

Part C E-poster presentation: Based on Part A and Part B present the Critical Reflection and key findings as a group (10 marks)

Details of each of the three parts of this assignment 2 is detailed as follows:

PART A- Playing the HBR Operations Simulation Modules 1 4 over four years successfully

MODULE 1: THE DESIGN PROCESS

This module focuses on the heart of operations management, design the features of the smartphone.

MODULE 2: FORECASTING DEMAND

This module unlocks the receiving department and puts you in charge of managing the supply chain and material inventories to meet client needs. This module should take 25-45 minutes to complete

MODULE 3: SUPPLIER SELECTION

In this module, you will choose which supplier or combination of suppliers to pursue, and optimize their receiving, production, and shipping departments accordingly.

MODULE 4: REVIEW

In this challenging scenario, your decisions will be reviewed by the board team to understand the reasoning behind it.

As you go through the game, each one of you must take screen shots and fill the GSCMV2_Records sheet document simultaneously (See GSCMV2_Records sheet document in Modules Assessment 2 in Canvas). Refer to the HBR simulation ppt pack for Assessment 2 and the recorded video for details on how to access and navigate through the game which defines activities to be done individually and as a group.

PART B - Based on Part A, the group will write the Critical Reflection Essay of 1500-2000 words for the HBR Operations Simulation Modules 1 4 played successfully (20 marks)

As a group, write 1500-2000 words critical reflection essay which investigates, analyses and critiques the operations process through the use of a simulation game that produces specific outcomes for the modules. This should include specific examples of evidence within your critical review narrative eg.screen shots, key strategies applied in each module for different years, etc in relation to the 3 criteria listed below:

Provide a critical analysis of the 4 modules that you have successfully simulated/played in terms of e.g., inputs decisions and outcomes of different scenarios; then value your own groups overall learning experience gained from the simulation game (e.g., critique on the operations process, any strategic decision or conclusion can be drawn from the game) (700-900 words, 8 marks) by addressing the below questions:

Discussion on the overall experience of the game.

What are the strategies adopted to forecast?

Which decisions did you spend the most time on?

How did you make the decision in every module? How did you deal with tradeoffs?

Discuss what was overall good about the use of this simulation game and its use in this subject based on results for example, top vs lowest scorers you obtained: What worked/what did not work for forecasting, changing production orders as a strategy - pros and cons, what decisions were effective, what decisions caused the most issues? Additionally, discuss what aspects/areas of the subject were lacking or not included in the game, and identify limitations of the game that can be improved or used in the future. Another way to reflect upon the game could be based on particular lessons learnt, where you can answer the following aspects of the particular lesson learnt:

Strategy and profits of production flexibility

Forecasting and tradeoffs: hybrid systems used

Marketing impacts as well as process performance measures attained

Boardroom logic used by board members

This section could be up to a max of 700-900 words worth 8 marks.

Discuss what aspects of the tool that can be applied at your work place, if not in workforce describe how these tools/learnings can be applied in your life or future and conclude the essay (100-200 words, worth 4 marks).

This essay should have the three points as listed above each of these three points should cover your experiences and critical reflection of the four modules in an integrated manner as evidenced by the group. You should endeavour to take screen shots etc as you play the game from day 1 and they can be included as evidences within the appendix if you deem them essential. Note: Appendices, references are beyond the word limit count.

Submission: You are required to submit a critical reflection essay covering a critical reflection of all 4 modules written across the 3 criteria listed above and the submission should have a cover sheet provided under Assessment 2 within Modules in Canvas.

PART C- Based on Part A and Part B, present the Critical Reflection and findings as a group (10 marks)

All the groups need to present the decision taken during each year for the four modules and how their individual decisions differed from other members in the group using a decision tree (preferably in the form of a mind map/concept map/flow chart or even something that is more creative. This decision tree needs to be drawn on the e-poster and presented in class (see sample in the slide pack). Through a 10 minutes presentation in the class, the groups need to include the following aspects in their e-poster (See samples of e-poster in Modules Assessment 2 in Canvas):

Summarise the pros and cons of how the decisions taken by different team members differed or were similar, and what were the consequences of such decisions in a summary table.

Through the use of a type of decision tree visually show the key strategy adopted across four years and 4 modules that resulted in high performance measured in terms of the gross profit at the end of the four years as well as the votes received from the boardroom (this decision tree should have 4-5 different colour used to represent each member key strategy in one integrated drawing). You should also include a few sample screen shots in support of findings if space on the e-poster permits.

Present a summary of the final learnings from the simulation model as applied to key concepts learned from this simulation game across the different supply chain management processes.

**Kye please do the first part of this question** - feel free to also expand upon my section if youd like

Value of learning experience 142 words Brad

The group appreciated the level of insight into the world of global operations and supply chain management that the simulation delivered. It provided the ability to experiment with new tactics without the risk involved. Thus, it gave us a clear understanding of how different decisions have a diverse impact, whether positive or negative. The progressive stages from the design room to production helped our team to experience and understand the entire supply chain system holistically. Conclusively, comprehending how suppliers hold advantages over another is critical to the success of any operation. The different years encouraged us to progress and attempt to balance supplier choice and production most efficiently. One of the most valuable lessons identified was the need to remain flexible regarding the supply chain. This flexibility is paramount to accommodate the fluctuations in demand and match supply as closely as possible.

3) Critical Reflection and Analysis - Xiabao & Louis

Discuss what was overall good about the use of this game and its use in this subject based on results for example Top vs lowest scorers: What worked/what did not for forecasting, changing production orders as a strategy- pros and cons, what was effective, what caused the most issues? (700 - 900 words, 8 marks)

4) Discussion and Conclusion - Brad

Discuss what aspects of the tool that can be applied at your work place, if not in workforce describe how these tools/learnings can be applied in your life or future and conclude the essay (100-200 words, worth 4 marks). 169 words

The simulation software provides immense insight into a business's operations and how critical decisions can positively or negatively impact the business' success over time. Understanding your suppliers' key strengths and weaknesses provides a greater opportunity to strategically plan a company's operations and SCM. In a generalised workplace setting, the learnings from this activity underpin the key fundamentals of decision-making, no matter what the scenario. By conducting simulations for one's individual organisation, you will be able to forecast estimated demands for the product or service you are providing and more accurately determine the production levels you need to meet such demand. However, much importance should be signified to drawing comparisons between predicted forecasts and actual performance. Without doing so, a company is not learning from its past failures or successes. Therefore, the business cannot pass this knowledge and experience on to future projects. Conclusively, outweighing each decision opportunity is critical to the success of one's operations, as it needs to meet your business's needs and be aligned with its values.
