Tasks

The system is split into different parts. You will be assigned specific parts of the system to work on by the Instructor. Each individual will work on their parts and elicit requirements from the client. You need to use the following techniques/modelling tools to develop and document the relevant artefacts:

There are 5 artefacts below, these are quite often included in a requirements study. Databases are needed to support a system hence the system requirements relate directly to the requirements for the database. In some cases, we can ignore some requirements as their impact on the database is minimal. (ie. Their impact is more on the design/creation of the system, vs the database.)

Conceptualizing a Business

Anthonys fast food is a small company that started with just a simple idea to provide food service located in the Hills district. The relatively small fast food business is faced with many challenges throughout the year. By examining the importance of the fast food companys vision, mission, and values a student can see how these factors determine the strategic direction and will allow the company to prepare for the challenges ahead. In this paper, the business will be defined by a mission statement, a vision will be created, the guiding principles or values will be discussed, an examination on how the vision, mission, and values guide the business and an evaluation on how the business addresses customer needs and achieves competitive advantage. By examining the importance of a vision, mission and values, a company can ensure success.

Anthonys Fast food

Anthonys fast food specializes in fast food service located in the Hills district area. This service is provided 24 hours 7 days a week. The company has a small dine in area to satisfy the needs of all types of customers. The company services has a reputation of serving healthy, nutritious food to their customers in a prompt manner. The prices are affordable, and the staff are courteous and professional.

Define business by developing a mission statement

During the planning stages, the company has in mind a general intention or outcome that the strategy is to attain. For example, the mission or general intention of the business should be referenced during the strategic planning stage. This purpose is written in the mission. According to Pearce and Robinson (2004), The mission statement is a message designed to be inclusive of the expectations of all stakeholders for the companys performance over the long run (p. 26), in preparing a mission statement, a company must therefore, keep in mind to make it obvious and concise, include socially significant and quantifiable criteria and deem coming close to it from a grand scale. A mission statement should consider several concepts, such as the moral position of the company, the desired image the company wants to project to the public, the crucial strategic impact for the company, a depiction of the target market, a description of the services, and anticipations of growth and profitability.

The mission statement for Anthonys fast food is that the company strives to provide the highest quality at competitive prices to customers located in the Hills district area. The company aspires to attain the highest possible customer satisfaction levels by displaying highest standards in customer service, quality and professionalism. The company will set benchmarks for other fast food companies in the Sydney area by displaying unparalleled commitment in terms of ensuring customer service.

Create a vision

A vision statement is a future-oriented pronouncement of the companys goals and objectives. According to Ward (2009), A vision statement may apply to an entire company or to a single division of that company. In many ways, the mission statement states the companys reason for being and the vision statement says based on that reason, this is what the company wants to become. The strategy must come from the vision, since the strategy wants to accomplish the vision, and satisfy the companys mission.

The vision statement of Anthonys fast food is that the company will become a pioneer in the fast food industry by displaying extraordinary professionalism in terms of its customer service. The company will be a recognized benchmark for other existing and new entrants in the fast food business for its unique value proposition, customer satisfaction levels, and service quality and price competitiveness.

Define guiding principles

Key Values or guiding principles of the company is that customer is king, respect for culture and promote diversity.

Customer is the king: Customer satisfaction is the companys highest priority and the company will go to any extent to fulfill the needs and wants of our customers in the best possible manner.

The company will strive to respect the culture, customs and business practices of businesses and customers from different parts across the world.

The company will respect diversity and strive to operate in the most ethical manner in a cross cultural environment. The company will promote diversity at the workplace and will not discriminate in terms of recruitment, promotion and employee development on the basis of culture, ethnic background, gender or religion.

Importance of the vision, mission, and values

Vision and mission statements are extremely important in providing a strong framework, guideline or direction to the overall strategic plan. Vision and mission statement ensures that organizational employees and management have a clear sense of the longer term objectives and provide a firm platform to formulate other short and medium term objectives of the organization. It instills a sense of motivation among the management and the employees and provides a clear cut objective to achieve in the longer term. The formulation of strategic plans, tactical actions and control mechanisms are developed in light of the longer term vision and mission statement of the organization.

Values act as governing rules for organizational employees. It guides them in conducting their day to day operations. Value statements describe how employees want to act with each other in the business. Just as the core values underlie organizational culture, core values are also a critical part of the guiding philosophy and therefore, vision. Core values are therefore, extremely important to the strategic direction of the business. These core values can relate to different constituents such as customers, employees, business goals, ethical conduct, to the businesss management and leadership philosophy depending on the company. Values are statements about how the company will respect and appreciate customers, suppliers and themselves.

Evaluate Customer Needs and Competitive Advantage

A competitive advantage is practiced by creating distinctive competencies. A company can create a competitive advantage by creating a product or service with an added benefit as compared to others. By addressing customers growing needs and adding a benefit, Anthonys fast food hopes to achieve a competitive advantage. The company provides nutritious food, even though it may be a fast food company. All raw ingredients are fresh & sourced daily. Hiring is selective and all employees are trained in exceptional customer service standards. The company will guarantee that the service will be on time every time or the item is free of charge. By providing these services and benefits, the company believes it will achieve a competitive advantage over the other fast food companies in the area.

Critical Thinking of Objectives

The strategic objectives were derived from the mission statement. The mission statement for Anthonys fast food is that the company strives to provide the highest quality at competitive prices to customers located in the Hills district area. The company aspires to attain the highest possible customer satisfaction levels by displaying the highest standards in customer service, quality and professionalism. The company will set benchmarks for other fast food companies in the tri-state area by displaying unparalleled commitment in terms of ensuring customer service.

In terms of the financial perspective, the companys objectives are to increase market share, margins and revenue, the company; will need to become more competitive in terms of pricing to offer more "Value for the money" to the customers. This can be done by improving service quality, and adding value added services. The company will need to make good use of the best practices in market research, including market research tools and technologies, to develop a strong understanding of the competitive scenario in the industry and to keep a close eye on competitive development in the industry. This information will not only be crucial to sustain competitiveness in the current area, but also to gain an entry into newer areas.

In terms of the customer perspective, the companys objectives are to increase customer retention and satisfaction. The major key values or guiding principles of the company is that customer is king, respect for culture and promote diversity. Customer satisfaction is the companys highest priority, and the company will go to any extent to fulfill the needs and wants of our customers in the best possible manner. From the companies values a strategic objective of retaining the customers was established. If Anthonys fast food is to provide the best customer service, the customers must rate Anthonys fast food better than the companys competitors. In addition, since most customers want fast and safe service the company has set the metric as the reduction in waiting time for the customer to be served.

Two strengths of Anthonys fast food are a nutritious and wide-ranging menu offerings and exceptional customer service, so Anthonys fast food has set the strategic objective of providing faster service. Faster service will improve the competitive position of Anthonys fast food. By addressing customers growing needs and adding a benefit, Anthonys fast food hopes to achieve a competitive advantage. By providing these services and benefits, the company believes it will achieve a competitive advantage over the other fast food companies in the area.

In terms of the internal process, the companys major objective will be to improve process performance by improving technology and reducing costs. In order to move ahead of competitor's and move to the next level of providing high quality service at competitive pricing, the company will need to deploy best possible technology, software tools and software in different departments to improve efficiency and quality of operations. For example, it can make use of technologies to track food preparation from the order to the handing over to customers. Another possibility is to use CRM software to analyze customer database and to offer customized, improved service to customers. CRM will enable the company to offer world class customer service and develop customized marketing strategies to attract repeat customers. Similarly, ERP systems will integrate the operations of the organization and will significantly improve accuracy of logistics or procurement operations.

To reduce costs the company will need to reengineer its existing processes and systems and transform itself towards a more efficient organization by significantly improving existing processes and systems. Such initiative will require an organization wide quality initiative to identify bottlenecks, issues and problems and to adopt best practices for improving service and process quality. To reduce spending and costs the company has a large fleet of vehicles and as demand for airport travel decreases, it can deploy extra capacity into newer routes. This will allow the company to improve its capacity use and meet its fixed expenses related to operating such huge fleet in today's recessionary period.

Lastly, in terms of learning and growth perspective, one of the major objectives is to improve employee satisfaction. In order to improve employee satisfaction, the organization will need to develop a culture that fosters innovative, creativity and flexibility among its employees. Further, management should strive to transform the organizational culture into a direction that strongly supports quality and customer focus in each area of the organization. The current trends of employees changing jobs can lead to wastage of cost incurred in providing training. For this reason, the company has the strategic objective of optimizing the workforce by retaining employees.
